The 1938-penned piece is made up of a series of playlets examining different sectors of German society, from factory workers and farmers to court judges and priests.

The theatre group is a collaboration between Brighton Dome, The Nightingale and Argus Angel-winning company Hydrocracker.

In this revived version all four countertenors are now men, with Iestyn Davies in the title role, Tim Mead as Goffredo, Anthony Roth Costanzo as Eustazio and James Laing as the Magician.

Joining them are Canadian soprano Karina Gauvin in her Glyndebourne debut and Canadian baritone Joshua Hopkins as Argante, with Ottavio Dantone conducting the Orchestra Of The Age Of Enlightenment.
