STUNNING THE PUNTERS

The Old Market, Upper Market Street, Hove, Thursday, July 14, 7.30pm, £10/£7.50, 01273 201801; The Hawth Studio, Hawth Avenue, Crawley, Wednesday, July 27, 7.45pm, £10/£7.50, 01293 553636

AFTER a two-year spell of unemployment, George Dillon first performed Stunning The Punters (And Other Stories) at the Nightingale Theatre in Brighton in July 1990.

Now a veteran of 16 Edinburgh Fringes, Dillon returns with a high-energy performance of three tales of imagination run wild: Master Of Café Society by Steven Berkoff, the title story by Glaswegian writer Robert Sproat and Dillon’s own adaptation of The Dream Of A Ridiculous Man by Fyodor Dostoevsky.

Stunning The Punters sees an ex-skinhead tell the jaunty tale of his teenage gang’s graffiti spree which had initially tragic and then later more disturbing consequences. The narrative thrust of the story leads to an enigmatic conclusion, challenging the audience to consider whether ignoring racism risks empowering it.

Dillon’s own translation of Dostoevsky sees “a rollercoaster of accelerating oscillations between optimistic and pessimistic visions of human nature” while his performance of Berkoff’s Master Of Café Society attracted praise from the writer himself.

THIS piece of Brechtian theatre was originally staged at the Royal Court in 2012, and was well-received by theatre critics and audiences. It explores what it means to love and form relationships in the modern, technological world.

In a rapid quick-fire succession of scenes, where the audience are bombarded by information, the play shows a kaleidoscope of snapshot conversations – at times funny, at others poignant.

It explores the private as well as public consequences of living in the digital age, in a world of iPads, mobile phones, online dating and virtual friendships. Contains explicit language.
