In general, I seek entertainment among arts which have words – books, plays, films, music with lyrics – but this offering, from contemporary dance company Motionhouse, tempted because it promised “a unique interaction between film and live performance”.

In fact, the show, which lasted not much longer than one hour, delivered far more.

Themed around water, the composition moved through a sequence of stunning pieces evoking myriad aspects of the element. From oceans to pouring taps, rainstorm to drought, frozen seas to swimming pools – and many less easily identified – the audience was overwhelmed by watery images, sounds and movement.

The seven incredibly fit and fluid dancers worked tirelessly in tandem with a demanding, split-second film projection against a curved wall, which enabled them to dive into waterfalls, perch on deckchairs, drip from melting ice cubes and play other physical and visual tricks.

Afterwards, the feeling that remained was a sense of abundance. So much emotion and imagery crammed into a short time, so much energy and skill displayed for a relatively small audience – and all that water, water everywhere.

And there’s the thing. Inspired by the power of this non-verbal creativity, my mind was sparking with thoughts, emotions, quotations, connections. I realised dance lets you find your own words.
