It’s virtually impossible to live up to the promise of a show based on one of the seminal animated characters of the 1980’s but at the opening of the show it felt like K22 Productions were going to achieve it.
The gloriously ironic pre-show dated music, complete with adverts for “Woolworths; the place to be this Christmas” and mortgage companies that would offer you a whopping “three and half times your salary” boded well, but unfortunately those hopes were soon dashed.
The wit quickly ran out, giving way to long-winded dialogue, talking head direction and an over-complicated plot where fashionable anti-obesity morality took the place of an action-packed adventure.
However, what K22 did have was a great set, a full production of brilliant costumes for all the major characters, including a Danger Mouse that melted the hearts of children and adults alike, and a stonking theme tune.
Perhaps with a little rewrite, more physical characterisation, some super-hero action and the interjection of some audience participation to keep the little ones involved, they could turn Danger Mouse back into the “powerhouse” we remember.
