Cough medicine

4:16pm Monday 14th April 2008

My mother is in a right old state because last week she gave my one-year-old some cough medicine from her bathroom cupboard. Now we have heard these medicines have suddenly been withdrawn by the Government because they are dangerous to young children. Could she have done any permanent harm to my little boy?

Nope. A number of cough medicines for the under-twos were withdrawn in March because of the fact it was too easy to give the toddler an overdose.

Clearly, this didn't happen with your child. Like many doctors, I think proprietary cough medicines for children are largely a waste of time and money.

If you have to give your youngster cough medication in future, stick to pretty safe stuff - such as syrup of honey and lemon.
