Independent education
Standing out
ST AUBYN'S School in
Rottingdean was recently
inspected by the Independent
Schools Inspectorate and
received much praise.
The inspectors wrote of
a "stimulating and tolerant
atmosphere", of "outstanding"
pastoral care and of a focus on
personalised learning as "an
area of outstanding practice".
"Achievement in drama, art and
sport is outstanding for a school
of its size", the report states.
Last September, Simon Hitchings
started as headmaster. After
six years at King's College School,
Cambridge, where he was deputy
headmaster, he and his partner
Caroline Foster are bringing
a passionate commitment to
academic excellence and to the
creative arts, especially music.
St Aubyns provides a broad
academic curriculum and emphasizes
the importance of good
manners and courtesy as part of a
community founded on Christian
values. There is an extensive
extra-curricular programme
accommodated within the school
day. Educational trips and
a cultural programme of "Arts
Express" days enrich the
educational experience on offer.
Links with the local community
and regular charity fundraising
events help to broaden the
children's horizons. Weekly
and flexi-boarding places are
available for boys and girls.
Details of the next Open Day
and of Scholarship Assessments
are available on the school
website.
