LANCING College, for girls and
boys aged 13 to 18, is one of the
country's leading independent
schools. Founded by Nathaniel
Woodard in 1848, it is set in 550
acres of beautiful Sussex countryside,
west of Brighton. Its impressive
chapel is one of the landmarks
of the south coast.
Exam results are one of Lancing
College's key strengths. The school has
a reputation for academic excellence
and strong performance in value-added
terms. In recent years, Lancing has
been the most consistently highperforming
co-educational school in
Sussex with its A and B grade percentage
at A-level exceeding 80 per cent for
the last four years. In 2007, a stunning
63.6 per cent of A-levels were A grades
and 48 per cent of pupils achieved at
least three A grades.
A range of scholarships and awards
is available, and additional meanstested
support is available for award
holders.
The College prides itself on nurturing
individual pupils and inspiring
them to fulfil their potential. The Good
Schools' Guide comments: "First class
pastoral care, community spirit and
family atmosphere - the warmth is
almost tangible."
Whether boarding or day, pupils join
one of nine houses, sharing working
and sleeping areas in small groups and
progressing to single rooms. Most
pupils join the third form (year nine) or
the lower sixth (year 12). Pupils from
a wide range of countries bring an
important international dimension to
the school community but the vast
majority of the 500 pupils live within
a 50-mile radius including Sussex,
Surrey, Kent, Hampshire and south
London. Boarders may go home most
weekends if they wish.
Lancing's ethos is based on the
passionate belief that a good education
encompasses so much more than
academic work and good examination
results. Pupils are therefore involved
in a wide range of extra-curricular
activities including a large number of
different sports.
A working farm provides practical
experience for pupils wishing to
develop their agricultural, veterinary
and conservation interests.
The school offers a strong Combined
Cadet Force and many pupils participate
in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award
Scheme.
Music and drama also play very
important roles in school life. There
are two theatres (one open-air) and
regular productions for all age groups.
Lancing has a strong tradition of
choral and orchestral music, with large
numbers of pupils receiving instrumental
tuition.
The school has a proud history with
many distinguished former pupils.
