Neal Aplin emails: “I am working on my wartime family history from the First World War. A Brighton man named Private Joseph Carter (service number 10938) died alongside my relative Lance Corporal Douglas Aplin during the Battle of Cambrai, France on November 25, 1917 while serving with the 15th (the Kings) Hussars. Joseph and Douglas were good friends and Joseph’s mother’s name and address are recorded in the war diary of Douglas.

“Joseph Carter was awarded the Military Medal as mentioned in the London Gazette in 1918. The medal cannot be given posthumously so he must have been awarded it for bravery prior to his being killed in action.

“Joseph and Douglas were on the same machine-gun team. I would like to find out what gallant and couragous action Joseph took in order to be awarded the Military Medal. Perhaps it was connected to his friend Douglas? The Commonwealth war graves website provides the details of Joseph Carter’s parents: Henry and Mary Ann Carter of 51 Newmarket Road, Brighton.

“If there are any relatives still in the Brighton area, they may be able to help.

“My email is neal.aplin@live.com.”
