Two handsome Southdown buses stand side by side in Brighton close to the terminus in Pool Valley.
The open-top service 102, loaded with passengers, ran between Arundel and Devil’s Dyke. The conventional route 31 bus was on the long route between Brighton and Portsmouth.
Despite being more than 40 years old, both vehicles survive, one as a heritage bus and the other in private ownership.
The picture is taken from Southdown Memories by Glyn-Kraemer-Johnson and John Bishop (Ian Allan £16.99).
This lavishly illustrated book is a history of the old Southdown bus company, told largely from the viewpoint of people who worked for it.
