"Fun, cheesy, classy, vibrant; artistically inclined but tongue firmly in cheek” – Nigel Swallow is detailing the selection criteria for North Laine Photography’s popular Brighton and Hove calendar, which has been representing local life for 14 years.

“It’s great shots by any photographer,”

he goes on, “including classic landmarks and landscapes but interwoven with all the festival, beach and street pictures that help get across the Brighton vibe. Hopefully it goes some way towards representing what the city means to locals.”

Originally sold from its gallery above Snooper’s Paradise in Kensington Gardens before it closed in 2011, the calendar built on North Laine Photography’s commitment to supporting new talent and continues to have an open-access submissions policy.

Swallow spends a lot of time trawling online galleries and photo-sharing sites for potential contributors and welcomes submissions and recommendations.

Photographs are then shortlisted before being voted on by friends and other photographers.

Amongst familiar names such as Roger Bamber, JJ Waller and Alex Bamford, this year’s edition features new talent from cover star Heidi Anne Morris, whose shot of a descending seagull was taken on her very first visit to Brighton, to Finn Hopson, who took this striking image (above) of a misty Devil’s Dyke, among others.

Swallow aims to illustrate all aspects of city life in the calendar, from the picture-postcard West Pier sunsets to the rather less salubrious Naked Bike Ride.

The calendar is sent all over the world. “We have many customers who send it to loved ones who have emigrated and it’s a lovely feeling to know you are producing something that helps families and friends feel connected.”

Day in the life But it’s just as popular with locals, who enjoy marking the changing seasons with its images of a snowy Peace Statue or sunny Pavilion Gardens.
