Sussex in the Ashden Awards
Sussex is over-represented in the 2011 Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy, with two out of eight finalists from the county. The Big Lemon from Brighton and Turners Hill Primary School from Crawley have both been shortlisted for the prestigious award. The Ashden Awards, now in its 11th year, was set up to “champion practical, local energy solutions that cut carbon, protect the environment, reduce poverty and improve people’s lives”.
The Big Lemon bus company has been shortlisted for its approach to public transport, running buses on biodiesel made from waste oil sourced from local restaurants and cafes. Turners Hill Primary has improved the energy efficiency of its buildings, used renewable-energy technology and engaged both pupils and staff in its energy saving mission. Sarah Butler-Sloss, founding director of the Ashden Awards, says, “The finalists share a vision for transforming the UK into a low- carbon economy and their achievements should inspire us all.”
The winner will be announced on June 16.
