Fourth Avenue was the last to be built of five imposing streets off the seafront in Hove in the late Victorian era.
The others were First, Second, Third and Grand Avenues. Together they were called the West Brighton estate, a name unpopular in Hove, which was jealous of its independence.
This picture, taken a century ago, shows large houses which have changed little from the outside over the years but internally most have been converted into flats.
The main change has been the increased traffic with plenty of parking in a broad street.
This postcard is from the collection of the late Terry Sinnott of Brighton.
