This is a Brighton trolleybus pictured in Elm Grove on route 43a, making its way from Race Hill down to the Aquarium.

The trolleys were almost silent and could climb up Brighton’s steepest hills with ease. They were pollution-free and popular with passengers.

But after replacing trams in 1939, they made way for conventional buses between 1959 and 1961 because it was thought they got in the way of other traffic. The new vehicles were Bristol K and Leyland buses.
