This fine old Southdown bus was built in 1929 and was open-topped so passengers could enjoy the sunshine.

It was pictured at Pool Valley in Brighton and according to the indicator board was heading along the seafront to Hove Lagoon.

The postcard, sent in by Alan Dart of Storrington, says the bus is a Leyland TD1. The photo is undated but looks as if it was taken years after its regular service.

For much of the last century, Southdown was the main bus operator in many parts of Sussex. In Brighton it tended to run the long-distance routes to towns such as Worthing and Lewes.
