This is a view of Western Road, the main shopping street in Brighton, soon after it was widened 80 years ago.
The picture was taken from the Clock Tower end and the widening was achieved by rebuilding the right hand or north side. Much of the south side was demolished in the 1960s to make way for Churchill Square.
Brighton and Hove City Council still owns that side of the road which has provided a valuable income over the years.
The new buildings were generally not outstanding although the nearest one is quite pleasing. Note the lack of cars and that the bus has an open staircase at the back.
