The main difference between this scene more than a century ago and the same view today is traffic.
Most people in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras walked or used horse-drawn vehicles, while bicycles were becoming increasingly popular.
Today the Old Steine in Brighton is one of the busiest streets in Sussex with traffic whirring around a one-way system. Most of the buildings on the right still survive although many are used as offices rather than homes.
On the far left, the domes and minarets of the Royal Pavilion can just be seen behind the trees.
