This unusual picture of Brighton seafront’s western end was probably taken in the 1950s. The building in the middle is the Milkmaid Pavilion built by the council to celebrate the Festival of Britain in 1951. Many years later an extra floor was added and it is now an Al Fresco restaurant.

The building at the bottom left is one of the kiosks at the entrance to the West Pier. In the top right hand corner can be seen the start of Hove Lawns. The pool in the foreground contains dodgem boats. The handsome birdcage bandstand, since restored, can just be seen near the back.
