Pembroke Avenue postcard

Pembroke Avenue postcard Pembroke Avenue postcard

In the Edwardian era it became fashionable for people to send postcards of the street where they lived.

So the person who posted this card in 1909 proudly points out her home is ninth on the right-hand side of Pembroke Avenue, Hove, just beyond the lamp post.

The street looks much the same today, although a century ago there were no parked cars and the trees were young. They were probably planted when the houses were built only a few years earlier.

I think the surprisingly tall post with two street lights in the foreground was probably a sewage vent.
