Black Rock more than a century ago
Black Rock in Brighton looks aptly named in this photograph taken more than a century ago. Even the chalk cliffs are grey while stones on the beach below are dark There were frequent cliff falls at this point where the Downs first meet the sea until Brighton Council undertook defence work in the 1930s. The protective measures included the Undercliff Walk which remains to this day. It was built by unemployed miners from south Wales. But the really big change at Black Rock came in 1970 when work started on building Brighton Marina.
