Jersey was recently announced as one of Europe’s holiday hotspots and Lucy Pearce found the trendiest hotel to give the island a try.

You can see why the appeal for Jersey is broadening when boutique hotel’s like The Club are on the menu.

Hidden in an unassuming street in St Helier lies the luxury 5 star hotel which will make you want to skip sight-seeing for staying-in instead.

As soon as you step inside, the place oozes trendiness. My partner and I arrived early after the first flight from Gatwick and our room wasn’t quite ready so we hit the streets That was a good job, because the following day we managed to avoid venturing out at all.

Why would you, when breakfast-in-bed, indoor and outdoor pools, an honesty bar and library, terrace, spa and one of the Channel Island’s highest rated restaurants is at your fingertips?

We began our ‘day in’ by visiting the spa suite where we found a shallow pool with Jacuzzi bench at one end, an electric sauna, steam pod, salt-steam room and rainforest shower.

A little disappointingly the sauna was out of order during our stay, and the apparent building work to get it back into use disrupted the calmness of the surroundings.

Fortunately, we were due for treatments and so were able to hide away in the relaxation room where headphones playing relaxation music blocked out the noise.

The spa offers a range of treatments and I enjoyed reflexology while my partner opted for a de-stress muscle massage.

Feeling refreshed and relaxed, we made our way to the sunny outside pool area where we were served afternoon tea.

First off we were spoilt for choice when it came to choosing from a selection of leaf teas and herbal infusions.

This was followed by a delightful three-tier stand full of colourful sandwiches, scones and a delicate selection of cakes and fancies from the Michelin star The Bohemia Restaurant.

It was certainly a good indication of what was to come later that night at dinner.

After whiling away the rest of the afternoon snoozing on the sun lounges, we retired to our comfortable Deluxe Double Room (of which there are just 38, plus eight suites) and slipped into our gowns and slippers before getting ready for our table reservation.

Arriving early, we enjoyed a cocktail in the swanky surroundings of the restaurant’s bar along with complimentary snacks.

It was our second taste for the Michelin star chef Steve Smith’s food and made choosing from the menu even more exciting.

Bohemia’s menu offers four tasting selections alongside the a la carte: the vegetarian, the pescatorian, the surprise tasting menu or the Bohemia prestige menu all have the option of coming with wines.

We chose the prestige menu.

This consisted of sweet and sour grapefruit with pepper and tarragon, followed by asparagus, mousseron and quail egg and then crab, pineapple, yuzu and wasabi.

Next came Steve’s signature dishes – foie gras cream, sea buckthorn and burnt orange, with duck salad and pistachio and then a scallop with celeriac, apple and smoked eel and truffle.

This was a fantastic start ahead of the lamb loin and neck, Jerusalem artichoke, morels and wild garlic.

We were asked at this point if we would like a selection of artisan cheese, but feeling more than content we skipped that course and went straight to desert: rhubarb, ginger and champagne before whisky gujana malt.

It was also a nice touch, after all of that, to be offered homemade chocolates and coffee.

The highlight for me was the crab while for my partner it was the scallop.

Before our trip we were told by a colleague, who had been to the restaurant, that it was the best food they had ever tasted and neither myself nor my partner could disagree.

In fact it was by far the highlight of not just our hotel stay but our entire trip to Jersey.

Outside, the island itself was perfect for a short seaside break, with enough to see and do and lots of nooks and crannies to discover good eating and drinking spots.

If you don’t want to a hire a car, it’s easy to hire a bicycle and the bus service is good.

We spent one afternoon exploring Elizabeth Castle, which sits on a tidal island and an amphibious vehicle is required to get across to it.

The Jersey War Tunnels in St Lawrence are also worth a visit, as is Beauport Beach.

Or if you want somewhere to simply sit and people watch in the sunshine, the harbour town of Gorey will do the trick.

The island definitely has something for everyone, but if you want to add a touch of luxury and trendiness to your trip then The Club is where it’s at.

Even if you don’t stay over, or even in Jersey overnight at all, giving Bohemia a try is an absolute must.

Anyone with even the faintest desire for a truly incredibly gastronomic experience would be a fool not to pay it a visit.
