KICKING back in the fresh air and staring out into a woodland made it hard to believe I was in central London.

Admittedly I was sitting in a modest-sized courtyard and the trees were pictured on a canvas, but it was still a little slice of tranquility usually hard to come by in the big smoke.

And better still, it was my own private oasis even if only for one night while residing at The Arch.

I was staying in the Sullivan suite, and the outdoor area and its heat lamps weren't the only feature which made it extra special.

Throw in dramatic full height glass doors, a walk-in double rain shower and a pop-up television and you get the idea.

Just a stone's throw away from Oxford Street, Mayfair and Hyde Park, this family-run boutique hotel couldn't be better located.

Tucked away from the main thoroughfare, you feel as if you're miles from the hustle and bustle despite its close proximity to all of London's most famous attractions and amenities.

Seven Georgian townhouses and two mews homes have been converted into one to create the hotel which gives it an immediate homely feel too.

It has first impressions down to perfection, from the polite porters to the roaring fire and Georgian grandeur mixed with modern décor.

There is a strong artistic theme running throughout, with the hallways adorned with artwork.

It doesn't take long to spot the extra little touches either, from the complimentary lemon and lime iced water to the switches beside the armchairs in the library which act as a bell for the waiters, and its clear the family who run the place want its guests to feel at home.

These details were apparent once inside our suite too, with four delicious macaroons and a 'Welcome' message waiting for our arrival.

You'll have to choose between taking a rainfall shower or catching up on some television while having a soak – yes there's a television at the end of the bath – or you can do what I did, and do both.

This was only before lounging around in the big fluffy robe provided and helping myself to a drink from the minibar.

In fact if it hadn't been for our dinner reservation in the hotel's very own restaurant, I'm not sure we would have left the room.

Before our meal, we gave the Champagne Lounge a whirl which is fitted out with blown glass chandeliers and gleaming leather booths complete with a privacy curtain.

Two cocktails later, my parter and I were shown to our table in the relaxed surroundings of the Hunter 486 complete with stone oven proudly on show.

The menu didn't offer a huge amount of variety but it was impressive that it was still difficult to choose between the dishes for all the right reasons.

In the end I went for pan-fried scallops with chorizo, red peppers, rocket and balsamic (£12.50) followed by roast black of leg free-range chicken from the stove oven with roast potatoes, roast garlic and jus (£19) while my partner went for salt and pepper squid (£9) and Rose County rib eye with bearnaise sauce (£24).

The steak was beautifully cooked and the chips were perfectly crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, while I can honestly say the chicken was the best I'd ever eaten.

For dessert, I chose the coconut pancotta with mango sorbet while my partner decided to try the sticky toffee pudding with caramalised banana ice cream (both £6) and again, both were completely delicious.

To describe it as comfort food may seem disingenuous but for me that's just what it was, only done exceptionally well and served in the most trendy yet relaxed setting.

We finished off the meal with a Caramel Latte from the cocktail menu in one of the Champagne Lounge's private booths some hours later feeling entirely satisfied.

Our stunning suite was the perfect place to retreat to afterwards and enjoy a sound night's sleep in the most comfortable bed.

Breakfast brought to the room the following morning rounded off the stay, which was always going to end too soon.

Although they are true, the words 'cool' and 'comfy' just don't cut it when looking to describe this gem - a wonderfully warm and welcoming home from home in a ridiculously chic yet traditional hotel in central London.
