PASTEL painted houses, rolling coastal cliffs and fishing boats bobbing on the water. It's the epitome of a British coastal town. It's also the view you'll be privy to when you stay at Dorset House in Lyme Regis.

Perched on a hill, it is perfectly placed to make you feel as if you're a world away from it all while still being at the heart of the town.

But the location of this place is just one of many reasons to pay it a visit.

It is run by husband and wife team Lyn and Jason Martin who left their jobs to renovate the imposing Regency building.

What they have created is a warm and inviting space with more than a touch of glamour here and there.

Jason told how they weren't sure how to describe themselves.

He said they wanted to give their guests the luxuries of a hotel and the 'home from home' comforts of a B&B.

The pair needn't worry, as they have seemingly effortlessly managed both.

Lyn, who was running the hoover around when we arrived, helped us with our luggage before offering us a drink.

She informed us that we would be staying in Sea View, one of the five individually designed rooms in their family home.

There was no danger of us forgetting which one was ours thanks to the blackboard signs hanging on each door with the name of each guest lovingly written in chalk.

Inside, our room certainly had the wow-factor - from the high ceilings adorning stunning chandeliers to the huge windows with original shutters from which you'll discover jaw dropping view of the Jurassic coast.

Comfort was also guaranteed, thanks to a huge and comfortable bed dressed with crisp sheets and goose down duvets and pillows.

Not to mention the modern bathroom complete with beautiful toiletries and fluffy robes.

All the rooms have free WiFi, TVs with a DVD player, iPod docks and a selection of tea and freshly ground coffee complimented by either biscuits or chocolates.

We also found a useful welcome book, including helpful recommendations for places to visit, eat and drink and transport information.

On their suggestion, we strolled into town and along the seafront to Hix Fish and Oyster House.

When it comes to views, Dorset House may have met its match - with Hix's boasting the best over the bay.

It had a wonderfully laid back vibe, mainly achieved by the excellent staff who helped to make us feel totally at ease.

It offered an extensive menu including fresh fish dishes and local specialities plus a drinks menu with delicious cocktails.

Our waiter recommend the Autumn Gimlet and I was not disappointed.

Back at Dorset House, we were pleasantly surprised to be greeted by a turn-downed room and a decanter of Sloe Gin.

Don't make the mistake we did and help yourselves to a night cap at the Honesty Bar in the B&B's Snug beforehand - check your room for complimentary beverages first!

The following morning the Snug proved a perfect place to read a newspaper and magazine in front of the woodburner.

There are also maps available to borrow, along with wellies and umbrellas should you fancy an impromptu ramble.

One thing is for sure, the Dorset House breakfast will certainly put you in good stead if you opt to go for a trek.

Home made Granola, artisan coffee and Eggs Benedict or Royale to die for make it a real treat.

After breakfast, Jason was more than helpful when it came to suggesting other places to eat that night and even booked a table for us and another of their recommendations - Poco Pizza.

Should you get the chance, you should definitely visit this adorable place which only holds 11 people (book to avoid disappointment).

Lyme Regis is a magical town but Dorset House was certainly one of the highlights of the trip.

I don't think Lyn and Jason need to worry about how to describe themselves.

The luxuries of a hotel, the personal touches of a B&B and the comforts of your own home - what they have on offer is fabulously unique.
