Council blasted for Falmer press ban

A council has come under fire for its controversial decision to ban The Argus from a public meeting to discuss the proposed Falmer stadium.

Falmer Parish Council has pledged to hold a secret meeting to debate whether to launch a High Court appeal against the Government's decision to grant Brighton and Hove Albion planning permission for the £50 million development.

The matter was set to be discussed during a parish council meeting at the village hall in Falmer on Tuesday, but was adjourned once officials realised The Argus was present.

Councillors then said the meeting would eventually take place "in someone's house" and "not in a public place". A villager also physically blocked reporter Simon Barrett's path back into the public building.

The move has sparked outrage among stadium campaigners, Albion fans and MPs who have all urged the council not to oppose the plans.

Paul Samrah, the chairman of the Falmer For All campaign, said the clandestine nature of the meeting brought back memories of the "cloak and dagger" David Bellotti and Bill Archer regime during the club's final years at the Goldstone Ground before it was sold.

He said: "Falmer Parish Council is behaving like a trapped rabbit with nowhere left to turn. The councillors are not making it easy for themselves and are fast losing any credibility they once had.

"All we want is to work together with these people, but secret meetings and the like just raises the temperature and inflames opinion. It is ludicrous and they really are playing with fire.

"It reminds me of the Archer era when there were numerous meetings like this and confusion reigned. It has been eight years now, and the time has come to accept the decision and make it work for everyone."

Opponents have until September 4 to try to derail the development and the decision of the parish council is seen as the final hurdle in Albion's marathon journey for a new home.

The parish council has a duty under two Government acts to hold meetings in public, unless the matter is deemed confidential and a resolution to exclude the public is put forward. The law does not allow councils to remove any particular member of the press or public - even if they don't like them.

There were celebrations among stadium supporters last week when Lewes District Council announced it would not appeal. Lewes MP Norman Baker, who opposed the scheme, has also called for opponents to accept the Government's verdict.

David Lepper, the MP for Brighton Pavilion, said: "This behaviour is certainly not in the spirit of democracy. This is a matter of great public concern, not just for those who live in the Falmer parish but for people in Brighton and Hove and right across Sussex.

"I think to discuss such an important matter in private is a mean-minded and silly decision. The district council have accepted the stadium is going to be built and it is now time for the parish council to follow suit."

Parish councillors say they could ballot villagers on whether to appeal. They have also mooted the possibility of forming a coalition alongside the Campaign to Protect Rural England and the South Downs Society.

Communities Secretary Hazel Blears approved plans for the 22,500 seat arena last month. If no appeal is brought, Albion hope to kick off the 2010/11 season in their new home.

The original decision to grant permission, made by John Prescott in 2005, was quashed in the High Court after it was revealed he made a mistake in the wording of the document.

I'm sure a high court judge would take a very dim view of this behaviour by Falmer Parish Council. Not doing themselves any favours are they!

This debate has gone on long enough. Falmer is the correct location for the Seagulls where we can watch our local team grow and develop.

Inderviduals such as Mrs Cutress and the rest of the parish council are out to ruin it for the rest of Sussex.

Parish Councils should promote community and embracing all aspects of this, but the Falmer Parish insist on being selfish, just because football fans do not fit into the appropriate social class.

We must unite and make a statement agains Falmer Parish and boycott Forfars. Who, have clearly exploited Brighton and now they are at the forefront of the anti-Falmer campaign.

Boycott Forfars and stand against these people, I am fed up of the debate can we just get on with the football.

What a surprise...Cuttress and her poodles decide to go against the laws of the land in an attempt to cover up their web of lies and deceit.

Not only that, they have a thug on the door to prevent a member of the press going in and reporting on the meeting. What on earth makes Cuttress think she is above the law in her selfish campaign? At least the thug wasn't DeVagi's 'boyfriend' who has a penchant for battering press photographers.

Such nice people these FPC members-and there was I believing Cuttress that football fans were the low-life scum.

One thing has been proven-no matter how much money your husband has, class cannot be bought.

I hope that the government decide that the unlawful actions by these councillors is enough to haul their lying, conniving backsides into court.

Possibly when the Argus reporters are able to report in an objective and disassociated manner, rather than being the Falmer Stadiums biggest ra-ra supporter, will they be allowed in.

I read with interest the comments in a previous article that were submitted by Jo in which she accused Albion fans of being sheep like. Well then Jo what does that make the people making up FPC who seem to be dancing to the tune of a certain Mrs C. Unfortunately Mrs C may have a few bob from her husbands business, a lot of it from Albion fans who now know what baker not to go to, but she, and the rest of her cronies have clearly mis-judged the situation. They have opened hemselves to ridicule and the fact that they had to resort to hiring a heavy to block the legitimate activities of the local media shows hat they know that not only have they lost the battle they have also lost the war. It is time Cutress came out and accepted the inevitable and tried to work with the club and the media rather than pursuing what is now clearly a personal agenda of hers and the few in Falmer that support her. I wonder if she would ever like to make herself known if she ever attended an Albion match ? I for one will never shop in Forfars again.

It doesn't matter if they are or are not able to report in an objective and disassociated manner. They had a right to be there but were stopped by a thug on the door.

No doubt Cuttress's Sussex Express lapdog was allowed in? I don't recall any of their 'reports' being objective and disassociated. Once again, the NIMBYs double standards come to the fore. Is there anything you people say or do that doesn't distort the truth?

Sue even if they were "Tired of The Argus' biased reporting with respect to proposed stadium at Falmer", that does not give them the right to break the law. Like others have said the Sussex Express have also been known to print unbiased reports. At least the Argus sticks to the truth, even if it is sometimes weighted in favour of the stadium.

By deciding to hold this key meeting in "someone's house" they are only highlighting the fact they have no where else to turn and are desperate for any chance to hold up the inevitable fact that the stadium will be built.

This bullying of Falmer Council, no matter what you think of them, does us no credit at all. We have waited this long, so let them make their decision as any undue pressure may also make them determined to fight longer.

Dignity in victory? I think BHA have shown the uptmost dignity all through this campaign and so have the majority of supporters, of course you always get one or two idiots but if you are looking for undignified behaviour look no further than the undemocratic coucils that have opposed this stadium.

Hardly a surprise they banned the Argus. The Argus is hardly objective and unbiased, is it? In fact its coverage has been shameful. That's why the real news is how appalling the Argus's behaviour is, nothing to do with the so-called "community" stadium.

The only reason The Argus was banned (unlawfully) is because they have a lot of clout on this issue, and supports all of our football clubs and other local sports. It's not biased towards the Stadium issue. That's just you being short-sighted, Arnold. It's a local paper, not a rubbish tabloid like the Mail or the Sun. Talk sense.

Andy R, Hove says...

It is standard practice for council committees to discuss legal advice in closed session. The argument is that if you are weighing up the pros and cons and deciding whether you have a case or not, you don't want all your deliberations published to all and sundry (in particular to the other party in the proceedings).

It may be wrong it may be right but it is disingenuous to single out one instance. When David Lepper was a councillor he would quite happily gone along with this on numerous occasions, and does the Argus make this much fuss every time it is excluded from a council meeting?

Scorpion, Newhaven says...
1:10pm Thu 9 Aug 07

While I think FPC may be straying over or close to the line as far as not having their meeting in public, the sort of outbursts by certain people on here show just exactly how their thought processes work. Or not. Its one thing to lambast the council on their decision when it seems wrong, its another to get all abusive just because their process of coming to a decision isnt to their liking. This is not a competition to see whose behaviour is the worst.

I'll say it again for you Arnold because you obviously aren't paying attention-or is it that you simply cannot stand the truth?

Anyway, pay attention: The Sussex Express conducted the most shameful anti-Stadium campaign, preferring LDC lies and fake pictures over the truth. You have a nerve accusing The Argus of bias whilst ignoring the rag that says what you want to hear.

Maybe the people on this board are tired of seeing the same old lies being rolled out time after time after time after time after time?

Most people in favour of the stadium would have much more respect for you NIMBYs (or NIMBY's supporters) if you spoke the truth (once would be nice) and told everybody your real reasons for not wanting BHAFC to have a new home.

We all know that the real reason the NIMBYs are opposed to the stadium is anti-football supporter and nothing to do with protecting the Downs. You, me and everybody else knows that the stadium site is included in B&H's plan for development. It is going to be built on-when are you people going to admit this to yourselves first and then to the rest of us?

personally, i would have preferred waterhall, but at least the football club and many of its supporters have operated with decorum.
i may not like forfars doughnuts and i may not be a big fan of boycotts, but i understand the sentiments of those calling for direct action.

Some very good points raised Alastair. Many of us just want this business to end-FPC are the ones that have been behind ALL of the delays with LDC originally tugging their forelocks towards Cuttress and going along with disgraceful tactics and lies. Thankfully, they can now see they were wrong and have said they will not support any further action. Cuttress and a handful of snobs, however, are still acting with total disregard for everybody, resorting to less than legal actions at council meetings, even resorting to having a thug on the door issuing threats to a member of the press who had every right to attend their meeting.

It is definitely time for FPC to end this nonsense-unless of course thay are prepared to spend in excess of a quarter of a million pounds when they lose their appeal.

I hope that Falmer Parish Council do decide to appeal against the proposed stadium. It's all very well for so called Albion fans and others to say that the stadium would be good for everybody but they won't have to live with it on their doorstep and be subjected to the increased traffic etc that it will undoubtedly bring to an area that is already subject to very heavy traffic almost every weekend.

We are talking about the stadium being used every other weekend with an occasional mid-week game.

You people are getting more ridiculous by the minute with your un-rational arguments.

Accept the decision and understand that the sky won't fall in after we move into our new home. I'm sorry to resort to this but you are pathetic and clearly as selfish as hell. Something that will benefit generations and all you can think of is a little bit of extra traffic for an hour on a Saturday? Pathetic.
