Pensioner Marjorie Bowley got the shock of her life when she discovered a FOX sleeping in her bed.

The 77-year-old discovered the bushy-tailed bed-fellow snuggled up on her blankets after getting off her electric stair-lift.

The vixen - who was later christened Samantha - had stolen in through a catflap at the back of the house in Marlborough Road, Goring, and curled up on her bed.

Mrs Bowley said: "I came home on Thursday afternoon and heard a strange noise from upstairs. I went up on my stairlift and as I got to the top I saw a fox in the middle of my bed.

"I tried to shoo it off but it wouldn't budge. It was so bold. It just looked at me and moved up to the pillows."

Marjorie went back downstairs and phoned a neighbour, who in turn called the RSPCA.

She added: "I've lived here for more than 20 years and I've had foxes in my garden before but never in my house. I was surprised at how brave it was."

John Stenning, the neighbour Marjorie called for help, said: "I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The fox was not moving from the bed and she seemed perfectly at ease with humans.

"Even when we took photos it just sat there. I think Marjorie was a bit miffed because she'd only just bought a new quilt and had to have it washed straight away."

Eventually the RSPCA called the Worthing and District Animal Rescue Service (Wadars) to pick up the fox, which is about one year old.

Billy Elliott, rescue officer for the charity, said: "This is extremely unusual behaviour, and it is likely the fox has been left to fend for itself as its parents would be mating again around this time of year.

"It is likely Samantha has gotten too used to humans and the house was very warm so it was probably just a bit too tempting.

"The fox was comfortable but when she realised I was trying to catch her she tried to hide and I had to prise her out from behind the bedside table.

"One of the neighbours said he had fed her by hand the night before. The problem with that is the foxes get far too used to human contact and rely on us for food.

"At the end of the day they are wild animals and need to be treated like it, so leaving them food once every two or three days is enough.

"However it is the first time I've been in a bedroom with Samantha fox, so it wasn't all bad news."

Billy said the vixen was suffering with a bad case of mange, probably due to her poor diet. Mange is an infestation of the skin of animals by mites which cause hair loss, itching and inflammation.

Samantha was taken to the Fox Project in Tunbridge Wells where she is being nursed back to health. It is hoped she will be released back into Goring once she has made a full recovery.

We were on our way to help this lady but by the time we got there the RSPCA had already beaten us to it.
Oh well, there must be an accident scene or fire that we'll come across somewhere and spring to the rescue.
maybe Michael Caine is still around.....

Dear Fiona & Sara,

Whenever I try and cook my own egg fried rice it always seems to turn out clumpy and sticky. I'm at my wits end. Please can you offer some advice to help me out of this predicament?

Yours Despairingly.

Andrew.

This sounds a remarkable fox. How did the fox work the stair-lift?

Perhaps it was tired after being in the wild.

Mrs Bowley could have trained it further as this is obviously a very bright fox.

If i found it in my bed i'd just probably leave it,maybe cook us some dinner, watch some tv,just generally hang out with foxy until it decided to leave.

Foxes + squirrels are always welcome at my place.

Good to hear theyre treating the mange this time, they usually just put them down.

That’s a strange coincidence, there's a Fox Inn just down the road from us, must be that time of the year or the effects of global warming.

I think all of you that have posted silly comments should be ashamed of yourself!! This is actually a serious story.. can you imagine the fright of the lady seeing the wild animal in her bed. at 77 a shock like that could have been harmful.. whats more, i think it serves as a bigger wake up to us all, that wild habitat is being lost at an alarming rate, these wild animals have nowhere else to go other then into peoples houses.. There is lots of prime time fox habitat around titnore woods, but if housing goes ahead there, this won;t be an isolated incident, and this story which has served to amuse you could become a serious issue when a child is attacked or a family pet killed. Think People!!

I am worried about foxes right now - with the new wheely bins a food source must be scarce... we have taken up so much land they have integrated with us but now given the evolution of our relationship - how can we support them? We have a tame one around here.. I hope he survives OK. I love to think there are some of these incredible natural species are around roaming free and we have not taken over everything and made it our way.... Yes, it must have been a scare but I would feel priviliged that a fox trusted me and maybe came in for help.. just had enough of trying to survive and requested a helping hand ... awwwww!

For crying out loud Andy...quiet in the City of London today??? Even I can do that without it turning out clumpy and sticky. 'I'm at my wits end'...the Words 'Andy' and 'witty' don't go together!!! 1-0 to me, I believe!!! See you tomorrow afternoon...

I have had a mangey fox coming into the house in the last 2 months. The first time it came upstairs (came through the cat flap) and gave me the fright of my life. The second time, I came home and the house smelt disgusting. I followed the smell to it's source and the fox jumped off the bed and ran away. The bed was covered in scabby dried skin. I washed all the bedding in 90deg but ever since I have had bites all over my body. Foxes may be cute, but they are covered in mites. This fox looked really sick, the poor wee thing. Bring back Basil!

We had a fox right outside our window this morning ,our dog a lab was upset but not aggressive towards it,it would chase the fox and then the fox would chase it back playful like. The fox was red with black legs looked in good health, some briars in it's tail,it stayed and was circleing the house for about 10 minutes, went up to the barn and then back to circle the house,it came up to the window and on the porch.then just trotted off down the road.we live on a farm there has been some developement near by,not alot. I've seen foxes alot more lately but never this bold.We couldn't beleive it's behavior, hope it wasn't sick.
