Whitehawk crash victim named
Matthew Sadler
Matthew Sadler

A teenager who died in a car being followed by police has been named by friends.

Matt Sadler, 17, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital early on Saturday morning but died of his injuries.

A police patrol car saw a red Mazda containing three men and two women, all from Whitehawk, being driven erratically in Bevendean, Brighton, at 1am on Saturday, and signalled it to stop.

The driver did not respond and was followed by a police car to Whitehawk, Brighton. He crashed into a brick wall in Wilson Avenue and careered through two gardens.

All five were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Matty died and a 16-year-old youth remains in critical condition.

A 15-year-old girl was discharged earlier today and the 15-year-old driver and another 15-year-old girl are recovering.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission(IPCC) has launched an investigation into the crash and has deployed two investigators to the scene.

IPCC commissioner Tom Davies said: "My condolences go to the family and friends of the dead man.

"This must have been a traumatic incident for everybody involved, including the members of the emergency services who attended.

"The IPCC investigation will be independent and proportionate."

Some 14 police cars, a fire engine and police helicopter were called to the scene, according to a neighbour.

Sussex Police arrested the driver of the car who tried to flee but was located by the police helicopter.

Warren Morgan, Whitehawk councillor and chairman of the Whitehawk Crime Prevention Forum, said: "My thoughts are with the families of those people involved in the crash.

"If it is confirmed that they are from Whitehawk I am sure that the strong local community there will want to focus on supporting those families as they deal with what has happened.

"The Independent Police Complaints Commission are investigating what took place and everyone should await the outcome of that investigation before giving any further reaction."

Mary Mears, deputy leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, said: "It is very tragic and we will be working with the community to help them through."

A spokeswoman for the South East Ambulance Service said: "We did everything we could to save the patient.

"This was a dreadful incident and our thoughts are with the families."

IPCC said it could not comment on the identity of the dead teenager.

Yes, I am saying that it is not the best place, and why should preferential treatment be given, just because the person who has died came from that part of town. If the boy who died came from Hove Park, would the council help he residents of that area 'deal' with their loss? I doubt it very much.

My daughter's 8 year old best friend lives in a bungalow in Wilson Avenue near these - her bedroom is the front room. There have been other crashes in this road where cars have gone into the house itself. If I owned one of those houses I'd put it on the market on Monday...

This is such a tragic incident but like stated already if the person had of stopped then he'd still be alive today!

People seem to think they are invincible and I'm sorry but this is the reality.

My thoughts are with Matt' parents.

I wish the lad was still with us, but it's all the people in the cars fault, including the lad that died. Not the police, not society, but them. And it's about time the powers that be stopped being whimpy and sorted them out before anyone else dies.

sadly no winners in this situation
sad for matt and his family and for all those children in that car whose lives will never be the same
and the police, just doing their job to keep us safe
and the householder whose wall can be repaired but will be marked by this
... but where does chelsea fit into this sad story?

When I was growing up in Whitehawk in the mid seventies I quite often used to "borrow" a car to go out in.Usually to impress some girls.Sometimes just for a laugh with my mates. We didn't smash them up and were probably more careful than most drivers as we didn't want to get caught.I never drove drunk although many adults did at that time.We all make mistakes but most of us get away with them and live to fight another day. These two kids didn't so a little sympathy wouldn't hurt. Some of the posters on here have obviously never made a mistake or done anything wrong in their whole lives. All I can say is that means they have never lived.RIP and love and prayers for their families.RIP Tommy Louis too.A mate of mine who died yesterday.

I am one of Matty's teachers. I have just been talking with several of the other teachers that have worked with Matty over the last few years. We all agree that he was someone very special. We loved him. There was always a massive struggle going on in him between doing the wild thing and doing the right thing. sometimes they were the same thing. Sometimes not. What will last forever are the good things he did, the help he gave to others who similarly struggled and the fun that came out of the struggle. His struggle is over. Ours carries on. Love to all who loved him.

Don't judge a book by its cover they say.
I had the priviledge of meeting Matty when he accompanied my granddaughter on a day out to Thorpe Park for her birthday. He was extremely well mannered and polite. He was very shy when he asked if it was alright if he called me "grandma" and was delighted when I said he could.

Matty may have come from Whitehawk, but there are lots of good kids on the estate who have hearts of gold deep down and Matty was one of them. He, like lots of kids, may have had his problem times - haven't we all, but no one deserves to die at 17 years of age.

If you haven't got anything good to say, then say nothing at all. It was a priviledge and a pleasure to have known Matty and my sympathies go to all his family.

I have met with police and community representatives tonight. I can confirm that the statements made about a female occupant of the vehicle having died as well are not true.
I have posted information from the police on my web pages www. brighton-hove-counci

Please have some respect for those involved and for the independent investigation and avoid comments here which are provocative.

Once again, something like this has happened when it could have been avoided. It's shame someone has died (maybe two?) but that is the chance you take in this situation. It has some similarities to the incident in Hastings a while ago when some kids died after getting in a stolen car and speeding along country roads. There were enquiries and blame was being laid at the Police's door but when you take it back to the basic element, they shouldn't have been in the car in the first place and when asked to stop, they decided to carry on. What can the Police do? Do they give chase, or do they let them go on driving 'erraticly' just in case they crash and kill themselves?

It's a sad loss of life, so will these young people now learn a lesson? How many more need to die in needless crashes? Wait until you're old enough - by law - to drive and then do so responsibly. Hopefully his will end the sad loss of young lives and all the heartache their families must be going through.

Isn't it about time that such people as councillors stopped trotting out the cliche that "our thoughts are with the family"? It's twice in the article.

They are not thinking about the families all the time. No more than I or anybody else is doing so. I do so for perhaps a minute while reading and writng this, but then I do and think something else, other things. That's life.

The people whose thoughts really are on this all the time are the families themselves, and that must be agonising for them, whatever the circumstances of the fatal crash.

Lets face it they all got in the car, without insurance and did not care about any other person on the road..Why were they out so late?? and why were they allowed to have the car??
Yes it is very sad that someone died but it is not surprising that they crashed..15 year olds are not meant to drive !!What did they expect ??

I agree with the comments about the council spending money to help the whitehawk community get through this! I mean would any other part of the city get such support? ... Would they f**k! Help those that help themselves. Also maybe it's time that we routinely arm our police officers then maybe 15 year old kids behind the wheel of a potentially very dangerous weapon will think twice about trying to evade the police! At present I feel the police do not command enough respect.
Posted by: Acheron, Hove on 11:36pm Sat 9 Feb 08
mediator,

I hope this doesn't come across as harsh, but in all honesty I really hope that you aren't using the site/forum/whatever you want to call it, as a place for talking and consoling each other.

That sort of thing needs to be done one to one, cyberspace is not the place for that and sorry to say if you think that it is, then you need to have a re-think.

While I'm sure it's not a place for callous comments and stuff like that, please, if you want to grieve/console etc, here is not the place either. It's a human tragedy (irrespective of the wrongs that have clearly occurred) and as such needs to be dealt with on a human level. Anything less reduces us as human beings.

Firstly can I just give my heart felt condolences to this childs family and friends. Secondly would like once again thank people for slateing Whitehawk and straight away making the assumption that this child was a hooligan and not looked after by his parents. Do any of the people which have wrote negative, spiteful, evil, messages know this this child his family or even Whitehawk. Yes the area may have it's problems but which area has not. You don't find people on this estate walking around making disgusting comments about a child dying and others being crtically injured. These kids may have made a mistake but I would like to see one person that has not. We all have, especially at that age, and tragically all people involved will pay for this greatly. I would also like to say that people are quick enough to pick up on the councillors comments about sympathy for the family, and the support for the local community but failed to pick up on the part where the councillor says about the strong community spirit which exists to this day unike in many other areas of Brighton. I am proud to live on the estate. God bless all involved

Homophobic attacks reported to the police have risen by 42 per cent, with 167 incidents between April and November. Racist attacks were also up by seven per cent to 408 over the same period.

Gay rights campaigners claim the official statistics are proof homophobic violence is on the increase in the city while police say the figures show victims feel more comfortable reporting hate crime.

I am a delivery driver for a Hove chemist. Last Saturday, I found myself chasing a female shoplifter. Unfortunately, as I am pushing 60, I am long past the age when I should be chasing young women, and I lost her in First Avenue.

The police could not have got to me any quicker if they had tried, and they did everything that could be expected of them.

The question is, what would have happened if we had caught the thief?

Crime has fallen in parts of a city but work still needs to be done to curb youth crime and disorder, according to police.

In the east Brighton division of Sussex crime fell by 573 incidents between April and November in 2007 compared with the same period the previous year.

There were more than 220 fewer incidents of criminal damage, about 100 fewer violent crimes and more than 80 fewer vehicle crimes.

A very tragic story with everyone blaming everyone. The kids are the only one`s to blame here.I grew up on a rough council estate, but didn`t turn to any sort of crime. My two younger brothers did though. They had the same parents as me, so why did they go wrong ?You can`t blame the parents or the surroundings, kids just get mixed up with the wrong crowd sometimes. If , however, all the kids in all the families involved, are all trouble makers, then blame the parents. As for all the slagging off of Whitehawk, grow up, you`re like playground bullies. There are a lot of very good people live in Whitehawk, but they are all being tarred with the same brush because of a minority who get the headlines.I was once subject to a load of homophobic abuse by a couple on St Jamess St, and was helped out by a group of people from Whitehawk who walked me to my home, and made sure I was safely inside before going on their way.My sympathy to all the people involved, including the emergency services, who had to deal with this tragedy.

This is indeed very tragic and my heart goes out to Matty's family. It is irelavant where he comes from, he made the mistake of getting into a stolen car with an underage driver knowing the law had been broken however this does not mean he deserved to die. The 15 year old driver will have to live with the fact he killed his friend for the rest of his life. A very sad case indeed.

So very sorry to hear of the tragic news and being a parent myself, my heart goes out to all the families involved. life is so cruel to take such young lives from us and it is the families left behind to try to carry on and it must be the hardest thing for any parent, brother of sister to have to try and do. Once again I send my deepest condolences to all affected.

I am a teacher of Matty's. He was a lovely lad with a good heart. He had a fantastic sense of humour and will ne greatly missed by all who knew him. I am shocked and appalled by some of these disrepectful comments. Leave everyone who knew him to grieve. Yes he made a mistake - most people do at some point in their lives and live to tell the tale. This is a tragic loss of a lovely lad, just turned seventeen. My thoughts are with his famlily and close friends. Rest in peace Matty. You will e forever in our hearts.

Myself and my friend were driving up wilson ave on the morning of this incedent. The car involved sped past us at well over 50mph and came close to losing control and crashing into us. we then saw the police car which was quite a distance behind, obviously so they would not force the driver to have an accident. I just wanted to leave this comment incase anybody is trying to blame the police.

I cannot believe the nastiness of some of the comments on this board. A young life have been tragically ended and some people seem fit to 'joke' about it. For those of you having a pop at parents and the Whitehawk estate, from my own experience I can tell you, it isn't easy. If kids don't want to come home on time, they don't. Nothing you can
