Battling yobs face match ban

Hooligans who sparked trouble before and after a football match could be banned from going to games.

Violence flared in Brighton on Saturday between so-called fans of Brighton and Hove Albion and Swindon Town.

Police last night said they will be seeking to stop anyone found guilty of breaking the law from attending future games.

After the game, 40 officers armed with shields surrounded Brighton station to deal with a confrontation between two groups of men purporting to be supporters of the rival teams.

Missiles were thrown at officers and two men were detained for a short period to prevent the violence escalating.

Brighton Inspector Andy Kundert said: "We had a pre-planned operation in place from 11am for the football match.

"After the game there was an altercation close to Brighton railway station which was dealt with positively and swiftly.

"A few missiles were thrown at police officers but no one was injured.

"With assistance from the British Transport Police, officers escorted those not arrested on to trains out of the city to Burgess Hill, Lewes and London.

"In excess of 40 officers were involved, with many moved from their normal duties to deal with this incident."

The Railway Bell pub in Surrey Street was closed from 5.45 to 6.45pm while police brought the situation under control.

Pub manager Roy Edinburgh said: "The Swindon fans came in before and after the match and there was no trouble. They were as good as gold.

"They went outside and began chanting. Police asked us to shut the pub and get everyone out."

Before the game two men were arrested in Clermont Road next to Preston Park railway station.

Lee Bull, 43, of Ambrose Place, Worthing, and Maxwell Lydford, 20, of Goda Road, Littlehampton, have been charged with public order offences.

They will appear at Brighton Magistrates' Court on April 3. An Albion spokesman said: "Albion supporters pride themselves on an exemplary behaviour record, both at Withdean and away from home.

"It appears the events involving so-called Brighton and Hove Albion fans on Saturday were isolated ones, and it is not even clear if those involved were even intent on attending the match.

"Ever since our return to the Withdean the club has operated a zero tolerance policy on any supporter who is guilty of any antisocial behaviour.

"Any individuals caught in breach of that policy can expect strict sanctions from both the local police force and the football club."

Swindon Town were last night unavailable for comment.

Absolutely pathetic of these sub-human wasters.

I wandered past, having been to the match and saw plenty of police about and they seemed to have good control on things.

Any excuse for these knuckle dragging thugs to have a punch or or show off their 'masculinity'. MOre fun was to be had with a post match pint with friends and a discussion as to whether we can reach the playoffs.

Get these wasters out of civilised society once and for all.

Unfortunately, the anti-Falmer brigade will use this as another pathetic excuse to moan about what will happen at the new stadium. I was at the game, but didn't see what was going on, but seems to have been sorted pretty sharpish. Just waiting now for T.Ruth et al to add their comments....fun, fun, fun!!!

The sooner all the thugs that come every week to PP and Withdean, have to go to Falmer the better. Means PP and Withdean are safe again ....

I'm assuming that's a wind-up.

However, if you are truly of this view - How dare you call all those civilised men, women & children who attend Albion home games "thugs"!

The Police stats for behaviour at Withdean Stadium on match days has been exemplary over the last few years.

People of all ages & walks of life attend Albion matches there & certainly DO NOT behave in anything but a civil manner.

I live a short distance from Withdean Stadium & have only once seen anything remotely like the threat of uncivil behaviour - NOT from Albion fans but from a small group of Cardiff idiots. This amounted to nought due to the positive policing.

Please take your wildly inaccurate prejudices & share them somewhere else!!

Shirley the answer is to put up mobile boxing rings in towns before matches, supplied with referees and gloves. A good beating in an organised manner never did me any harm. Tweet tweet parp parp.

Right you mugs listen up. If any of your firm want a right old tear up with some of our top boys bring it on. We can be proper naughty and I mean double, even treble naughty. Oh and make sure any treacles wear trainers because when we have a tear-up it gets mad..End of...

I agree. Taken out of proportion again.

So what if there was a few small rucks, all harmless. I didn't even know Swindon had hooligans. I hope the Brighton lads showed them who the daddy was.

Ye gods!

Groups of men on Brighton streets screaming obcenities at each other; my kids were almost as frightened as they were at last years Pride!

That said they were more scared when they witnessed the last Smash EDO march.............go figure.

Hahaha, the genteel resort of Brighton terrorised by a few yokels from Wiltshire.. I was far more frightened by all those burly moustachioed men with 'military' haircuts and leather caps mincing the streets at Pride.

Honestly Eggbound you have nothing to fear from me and my chums. Come along to Pride this year and we'll be sure to make you very welcome..Go on try it you might like it!

I was witness to what went on at the Railway Bell and the train station and the behaviour of the Swindon and Brighton fans was far from "as good as gold" - perhaps Mr Edinburgh the manager of the Railway Bell should stop talking rubbish and I never saw any police with shields. For once Argus, why don't you try to write an accurate article.

looks to me like it's just reporting that they've been charged and that's fact. the court may find they're not guilty of the charges.

What's inaccurate? As far as I can tell, this article reports the police's version of events ... that there was trouble ... and the pub manager's version of events ... that he didn't see any trouble. He may not have done. On April 3 the legal process will begin to establish whether the two people who were charged and who are named in the article are in fact guilty of having caused trouble. Still can't see what's wrong with any of that or the comments from the club.
