Council destroys soldier's medals
Council workers have thrown out a soldier's service medals - along with the rest of his belongings.
Thor Taylor, 40, placed his and his family's possessions in storage four years ago when he was having housing problems.
When he contacted the storage company to get his things back he was told they had been destroyed by order of Hastings Borough Council.
Mr Taylor, a freelance photographer from St Leonards, who sometimes works for the council, said: "It has ruined our lives. My family are traumatised and devastated with what can only be described as a bereavement."
Practically everything the Taylors had ever owned was lost, including medals and records from Mr Taylor's service in Northern Ireland, photographs of his father during Second World War and his medals, and photographs of their three children, aged between six and 11.
His wife Lynne Taylor, 48, said: "We've got no baby pictures whatsoever. We've lost everything."
Mr Taylor and his families started having housing difficulties about four years ago after his lucrative career in IT faltered and they struggled to keep up with payments on his mortgage.
Delays in securing housing benefit meant My Taylor was left homeless on occasions and his family were left to fend for themselves in bed and breakfasts.
The stress of the situation had a dramatic effect on Mr Taylor's health, which added to the problems.
Eventually the family found a new home in privately rented accommodation but ongoing problems with their landlord have meant they want to move again.
To raise funds they struck upon the idea to sell some of their possessions to raise funds.
Mr Taylor said: "I made the call and asked if we could have it back and after a couple of days of leaving messages we heard nothing.
"Then they said that last year the council ordered 35 crates to be destroyed and that our belongings could have been among them."
Mr Taylor said he could not understand how the council could have ordered the storage company to get rid of his stuff as he had kept in regular contact with the firm and had originally had a private agreement with it over storage.
A spokesman for Hastings Borough Council said: "We took storage of Mr Taylor's possessions because of his family's housing difficulties.
"The first four weeks were paid for by the council but after that he was expected to pay himself.
"We would expect goods to be taken out of storage as soon as possible. The council has been paying for the last four years for his goods to be in storage but clearly we still should not have destroyed the good without telling Mr Taylor and for that we apologise.
"We had been trying to contact him and had written to him eight times."
He added that investigations were still ongoing into what exactly went wrong.
What do you think of the way the Taylors have been treated? Leave your comments below.

That's disgraceful. If it was a matter of delayed or lapsed payments, could the council not have let this man know so he at least had the chance to scrape the money together and try to save his family's things? This is a particularly cruel thing to do to someone.

i worked in offices in brighton in a secure gated storage unit,i got friendly with the guys who worked there(and its not like that)and when someone didnt pay for a while they had right to get rid of poeples stuff as saw fit.the boys let me rummage a few times and i got a few bits and bobs.i would quite imagine that someone has got those medals if not a storage co guy,and they had to give the stuff to the council then as we all know there guys would have a rummage too.

Lost his medals? I left my nuts on a barbed wire fence at goose green, and never even got a medal.

l say its there own fault... reading between the lines, he was completely irresponsible. If the stuff was so precious to them, why leave it all that time and expect the council to store it,FOR FREE... l dont know how much stuff they had but, a garage is somewhere between 60 and 100 pounds a month to rent theses days,, where do they get off expecting free storage.. they were told 8 times.. to clear it. l would certainly want my stuff back asap.. baby photos? medals, personal stuff?
Housing difficulties? yea, never paid the rent more like!!
in 1960 my family were made homeless,(no fault of ours) no council to "store" our stuff, no one give a ****, there was 7 of us,(5 kids) we lost the lot, my dad went back months later to the "storage", not years, but it was all gone. photos, clothes furniture everything, no council or newspaper to winge to...no council to house us, we had to start from scratch, l was 14,very traumatic. .. it was tough, but we bounced back...we had to, no one to help.
Try starting from scratch with 5 kids,(age 2 -16) no car boots, no charity shops, no hand outs, no council, no nothing, we rented an empty house, there wasnt even electric,we got back on track, and did alright, my mum and dad got us a nice home and we all worked hard, me and my brother,15 and 16 by now were working and we all pulled together.. ..it made us stronger. Now, grown up, all of us kids have done well for ourselves...that was some learning curve..
.
l actually had a B&B for the homeless for a year or so in 2001..believe me, if you are a genuine case, the council take GOOD care of you, if you apply and fill forms etc do as you are asked, the council will take good care of you..if you keep putting youself in that situation, the council will get **** off..l know the kind of money the council pay to B&B
for the homeless.
(l told you l did well) Some deserved help some didnt..l wasnt there to judge but, l knew what went on..my own "homeless situation as a kid, played a big part in my life when l took my guesthouse..most cases were genuine and were housed between 6-12 weeks,
l expect Mr Taylor will want to sue everyone in sight now... thats what they do now, isnt it?, sue for everything,
how old? 40? a youngster...l say, Stop whining and take care of your family you irresponsible git...Your family is traumatised and devastated? what about when they had no where to live? umpteen times...were they not devastated and traumatised then?
the moral of my story is, If you want a decent life, you have to work for it, if you sit on your arse, dont pay bills, dont take care of your family yourself,, you will get out what you put in...
Absolutely Zilch!..
pity they didnt "strike upon the idea to flog there stuff a lot sooner...
And Gino, read the story,
the council wrote 8 TIMES...how much do you think the bill for 4 years storage is...at least,3, maybe 4 grand? l know...
l rent out 2 garages.. told you l did alright,didnt l!

He only went back to the storage company because he wanted to sell some of his possessions. Nuff said.

Were the letters recorded delivery? Where does it say Mr.Taylor wasn't going to pay? Im not sure we have enough of the facts to make negative judgment.

The evidence I have been given is just one letter requesting payment to the value of £579.oo for storage.
There is NO evidence to confirm the council sent 8 letters (stated in The Argus) or 8 e-mails as stated on meridian television.
The Council spokesman said the family were not contactable - I find this an interesting comment given the fact that Mr. Taylor is a freelance photographer for the local newspaper and has photographed various officers (including the spokesman) & members of the council on a weekly basis. At no time did any officer or member mention to Mr. Taylor that his families belongings would be disposed of.
Mr. Taylor also receives a Council Tax Bill therefore the Concil could have located the Taylor family through their own council benefit records department.
The family at NO time refused to pay the storage fee - had they have had financial difficulties at that time and were not able to finance the fee themselves then organisations out there specifically for situations like this one, would have been prepared to offer financial assistance, eg the Army.
Some individuals fail to understand that the as a result of this dreadful situation part of the Taylor families lives have been erased from existence.
The fact remains that Hastings Borough Council should have informed the Taylor family of their intention to dispose of the Taylor family belongings. We must also be aware that the quantity of belongings that have been disposed of is the equivalent of 3 'truck' loads of furniture, documents, photoraphs, ornaments, sports equipment, clothes, children's toys etc, etc.
In addition to this from evidence in my possession it is apparent that the Housing Department of Hastings Borough Council have also failed this family and investigations are now underway with the Housing department & the Borough Solicitor to find a way forward.

I know Thor personally, I have seen and know the effect this has had on him and his family. For the HBC to say they could not contact him is frankly not true. Thor is well known to several of the council officials. This is in my view nothing more than officials not making any effort to trace him. All one has to do is feed his name into Google and see what comes up. Or is this beyond their technical abilities?
It may also be of interest to those who make negative comments to be in FULL possesion of the true facts. This is a man who is an amputee and still found the time to visit Africa and help those children who were victims of civil war and wer themselves amputees. This man cares what happens to others, pity that the HBC do not operate a similar policy.

Morfeys said we could pay when we got it back later in the year. Make sure you have your facts straight before you put your big foot in your large mouth!
If my belongings were entrusted to Morfeys and I kept them informed of my situation I had no need to worry. The council and Morfeys have acted criminaly and have dug themselves a big hole. We want our precious photos and other sentimental belongings returned and hope they are somewhere to be found.
I bet I know where my private bear collection and sports equipment have gone, certain peoples houses! You just like to talk about your problems, well get off your high horse and understand what has happened before you spout off.

Housing difficulties? yea, never paid the rent more like!! in 1960 my family were made homeless,(no fault of ours) no council to \"store\" our stuff, no one give a ****, there was 7 of us,(5 kids) we lost the lot, my dad went back months later to the \"storage\", not years, but it was all gone. photos, clothes furniture everything, no council or newspaper to winge to...no council to house us, we had to start from scratch, l was 14,very traumatic. .. it was tough, but we bounced back...we had to, no one to help. Now, grown up, all of us kids have done well for ourselves...that was some learning curve.. . l actually had a B&B for the homeless for a year or so in 2001..believe me, if you are a genuine case, the council take GOOD care of you, if you apply and fill forms etc do as you are asked, the council will take good care of you..if you keep putting youself in that situation, the council will get **** off..l know the kind of money the council pay to B&B for the homeless. (l told you l did well) Some deserved help some didnt..l wasnt there to judge but, l knew what went on..my own \"homeless situation as a kid, played a big part in my life when l took my guesthouse..most cases were genuine and were housed between 6-12 weeks, l expect Mr Taylor will want to sue everyone in sight now... thats what they do now, isnt it?, sue for everything, how old? 40? a youngster...l say, Stop whining and take care of your family you irresponsible git...Your family is traumatised and devastated? what about when they had no where to live? umpteen times...were they not devastated and traumatised then? the moral of my story is, If you want a decent life, you have to work for it, if you sit on your arse, dont pay bills, dont take care of your family yourself,, you will get out what you put in... Absolutely Zilch!.. pity they didnt \"strike upon the idea to flog there stuff a lot sooner... And Gino, read the story, the council wrote 8 TIMES...how much do you think the bill for 4 years storage is...at least,3, maybe 4 grand? l know... l rent out 2 garages.. told you l did alright, didnt l!
I am Mr Taylor. The Council knew where I was. The month before they did it in July I was filming members of the council watching the chimney at Pebsham tip being demolished!!They could have spoke to me then! Instead of whining about losing a limb I carried on working and also graduated in IT Computing. I still work and the council know where I am and have lied about communication and fee's.

But Im alive. Those 6 lorry loads contained my families belongings! STOLEN while entrusted to Morfeys. My children are gutted and my wife is in deep depression. Our lives wiped out. Leave your home open and let folk have a rummage! Im sure you would like that. Put yourself in my shoes lady, it's disgraceful what you do. If you are looking at things that belong to a dead family with no relatives then fine. But we are all alive and kicking. We have been robbed! I cant put into words the pure rage and hurt we are feeling. Next time you go rummaging think about what you may be doing and the damage you could do.
