A carnival which attracted thousands of visitors has been cancelled after protests by traders.

The Kemp Town Carnival will not take place next month after businesses complained over the proposed closure of St George's Road on festival day.

Last night politicians, residents and pub licensees hit out at critics of the event, in its 11th year, with one angry landlord saying: "They should be named and shamed."

Kemp Town Community Events, the organising group, held a public meeting last May after businesses complained to Brighton and Hove City Council.

A number of traders voiced their opposition and afterwards the community group decided to fold.

Mel Gravenor, former community association treasurer, said: "We did experience some antagonism from some traders.

"They thought it was too big and there were lots of people around the road which I would have thought would have benefited them.

"Instead of engendering a community spirit it seemed to evoke antipathy from some quarters. We didn't get paid for doing it, we did it for the community."

Suzie Turner, former community association co-ordinator, said: "As a community group it became too large and, with all the organising and pressure, it was too much to ask of the team.

"It is tragic for the area. But it needs a year off so that it can re-start as a bohemian, community event like it was ten years ago."

Scenes from last year's event, which attracted 12,500 people, may never be repeated unless other residents form another community group.

Sean Agar, landlord of The Golden Canon pub in St George's Road, said: "It's a shame because it is Kemp Town's busiest day.

"It is terrible that a few businesses have been able to stop something which has been going on for so many years and enjoyed by thousands of people.

"I think they should be named and shamed. It attracted thousands of people last year when it was raining so imagine how busy it would be this year."

Brighton and Hove city councillor Gill Mitchell organised the first four carnivals when she represented the former Kingscliffe ward.

She said: "It's a great shame because it used to attract lots of people to the area. I would have thought the traders benefited.

"It is part of the Kemp Town heritage and will be a huge loss because it was so colourful and vibrant."

Simon Burgess, Labour's prospective Parliamentary candidate for the Brighton Kemptown constituency, said: "I'm disappointed it is not going to take place this year.

"It has played an enormous part in forming a sense of community in the area and people really look forward to it.

"I hope differences can be worked out and it comes back next year. It is such an important event in the local calender."

Craig Turton, Brighton and Hove city councillor for East Brighton, said: "People will be very disappointed if it doesn't go ahead.

"It is a great shame for the community because it attracts lots of families that would otherwise not visit the area."

Resident Christopher Sparrow, 38, of Bloomsbury Street, said: "It would be a shame to lose it. The carnival brought something special to the area.

"Closing the roads to traffic changed the whole pace of life and brought the whole community together."

I applaude this decision. Having suffered from people urinating on my pathway, being sick due to too much alcohol, made to inhale the smell of cannibis, being blasted out by pubs seeking to increase their profits - then I am against such a festival. It was an excuse for drunken behaviour. Perhaps now a smaller event can be organised that brings together local people and creates a family atmosphere. This event in the recent years attracted a load of noisy drunken yobs from outside Kemptown.

Anyway, NOWHERE in Brighton can ever be like Brighton was 10 years ago. It was a decent place then. Now it's just ****

Hasnt the recent roadworks prevented enough people stopping in KT(village) to shop and what about the December celebrations, are they cancelled to?

Wise move. There are already too many "parades" that have to be cleared up using B&H tax payer's money. The absence of drunken revellers will be no great loss.

Why do most of the people that go to this event look like they ned a good wash.

What a sad person you are Peter - and the rest of you. Loosen up and learn how to enjoy yourselves, or at least allow others to. Anyway, Kemptown is not a family area, if you want suburbia, go and live elsewhere.

as a resident of kemptown for many years (until march)I used to enjoy the carnival Peter it was not drunken antics as you suggest it was good clean family fun,the complainers should be named so that local people stop using thier services;this would show the real community spirit of kemptown

I love the Kemptown Carnival. Unlike so many events in Brighton, it's local, it's for the community and everyone- younger, older, of all persausions enjoy it. Presumably the traders are also concerned that a few charities make a few quid from goods on their tressle tables. Personally I'll miss the fun of it, the live music and miss having a drink in The Dragon. Shame on the traders.

Brighton is packed to overflowing with chavs. Unfortunately this kind of event attracts them with their Elizabeth Duke jewellery, JD Sports limited edition clothing and cans of Stella. If you could find a way to stop them going then it'd be great.

I'm sure that St. James's St. businesses would welcome the opportunity to put on a Carnival.
What do other businesses and community groups think?

As a trader in Kemptown Village Carnival can I correct the comments made. Also, I wasn't advised there was a meeting last night.

1) Several new traders attended a meeting prior to last years carnival and questions. How did it start? How were the organisers, ie Susie and Mel appointed? Was it a profit making organisation? Were any of the commitee paid? What happened to the profits? Why had it deteriorated into an excuse for a drunken day and the pubs making the biggest income? Why should the traders need to have security to keep the intoxicated out and stop any possible shop lifting?
It appears that what originally started as a family day had deteriorated. The day after that meeting Suzie announced that she was resigning after carnival 2007 as she didn't like having to explain.
Since then the traders have agreed that it should be a "Family Day" and have tried to form a new commitee, however there was a lack of support from some traders and no residents turned up at the last meeting even after posters were displayed in most businesses. The few people that did turn up agreed to give this year a miss, hopefully have a Winter Carnival and re-establish the Summer Carnival next year with the emphasis on the "Family" rather than a booze up. Barry.

Brighton/Kemptown has now been transformed into one big urban township that lacks the individuality and zest for life that not 5 years ago attracted people to live and stay in this city. Carnival has now been stopped, The Pride After Party has been watered down beyond belief and now residents complain at the sound of a pin dropping outside their front doors. People that aren't lucky enough to watch their house prices and business profits grow are now being controlled by the minority. Think on people, Brighton will eventually stop attracting the vibrancy it has been famed for if this behavior continues.

A sad day for Kemptown and a sad day for many many law abinding people who just want to enjoy the odd day out here and there

Anyone wanting a look at the so called unwashed and drunk that turn up to carnival take a look at www.maxmiller.org, once again proving carnival to be the domain of the drunk, reckless and drug induced.

PS I pay my taxes so I can actually have an event like carnival on my doorstep thank you very much!!!

Mr Whelen of the Argus should be ashamed of himself bringing this issue to the front page headlines. He obviously hasn't talked to the retailers only to the profit making publicans. I've talked to several retailers and none object to the carnival only the way they were being dicatated to by the Kemptown Community Events (Suzie Turner & co) commitee,no-one appears to know who or what this organisation is or if they use income from grants and charges made to local retailers and street traders for the day to supplement their own income or plough any profit back into the community. Apparantly no-one sees any financial accounts.
Reading the Argus today I see it's the emphasis on the publicans cashing in and their disappointment. Tough luck publicans we want a family day not a steet full of drunks by mid afternoon.
St Georges Rd has the potential of being a great shopping street and full marks to the independents working hard at it providing great products. The disappointing sites are the pubs again, ie The Thomas Kemp which was re-furbished last year but the floors above the pub resemble a squat the volume of music appalling when their doors are open and lower the whole tone of the street. Dave (a budding grumpy old man).

Barry and Dave's comments are totally spot on.As a trader in the road I can say that we were NOT against the carnival,we just wanted it to enhance our area, not be a 'boozefest'!The last couple of years I have found my doorway used as a 'public toilet',why should I have to put up with that?.Please can we get back to how it used to be,a happy family day that we can all enjoy...whatever day that maybe.

I'm realy disappointed this isn't going ahead. I take the point that some people do drink too much but we shouldn't let the minority ruin it for the majority. As a local resident I've gone for the past 3 years and its always been really good family fun.

What a shame, can the council not support this great day?

Personally, we will be sad to see the carnival go. It's a great event. Having a kids' shop near all the action, we can testify to the fact that it has always had a strong family pull and our experience has been very positive. No event is without issues, but let's hope that they can be worked through for future events. Thanks to the many unsung heroes who have worked incredibly hard to put on these events. And perhaps anyone sad to see it go can resolve to volunteer and help next year!

You have the right to complain under the law regarding the noise issue but as far as I am aware The Thomas Kemp like all establishments have strict guidelines regarding noise omissions and as such should have a noise limiter in place. I have talked to a senor official at Brighton and Hove Environmental Health, who by the way was very helpful. They confirmed that they will come and take noise level readings from a persons abode to ascertain weather or not your rights to peace and quiet are being infringed. Remember though the noise level reading is from your property and not from outside the venue. Hope that helps

A bit late here but i was very disappointed at the lack of a carnival this year.Very sad news.

Are those who complained Killjoys ?

Partly.

what i noticed last year is that there was a certain amount of antisocial behaviour around the area outside The Golden Cannon and the GC pubs total monoploy of the outside area by cramming in as many plastic tables and chairs as possible.

Plus the usual "Festival " types who show up and dont even live in the area anyway.I live here so i know they dont.

Its supposed to be for locals.

Not exclusivly obviously but too much publicity for the event does more harm than good.

Too much emphasis on drinking in the street and tables and chairs specifically the Golden Cannon.

What do they contribute exactly ?

Do they give part of their profits made on that day to charity ?

Personally i am sick of the Golden Cannon as its clientelle lower the tone of the area far too much. Its full of lowlife and 3 times now i have fended off drunken abusive Yobs outside or in the take away opposite who have been drinking in the GC pub.

Less pub tables outside and more foodstalls and whatever else.

Outside drinking on that scale destroys what could be a good day out for everyone especially kids.

Much the same story outside the Dragon but far fewer tables but a lot less antisocial behaviour.

It needs sorting out.

I've been looking around for info on the carnival and this is the only place I've found anything. I'm really disappointed it's not taking place. I was keen to go again this year, after attending in 2007 -- my first year in Brighton.
I took my 18-month-old son last time and we both had a great time. It was also a real good introduction to my local area. I used the shops and the pubs of kemp town much more afterwards, rather than heading for St James or into brighton -- I guess it's no bad thing to have a break for a year but I hope someone takes up where the last organizers left off and reintroduces the carnival in 2009.
