Banking giant Lloyds TSB has come under attack after announcing plans to offshore 250 jobs of full time-technology staff to India.

Today's decision is expected to affect dozens of people working in the bank's offices in Haywards Heath and Brighton.

Unite called the move "unjustified" and said it would also affect 195 contractors and temporary staff.

Lloyds TSB said: "Information technology is the backbone of our business and by combining the diverse skills of our staff, with those of other companies we can provide the best possible service to our customers.

"We've announced that we will offshore up to 250 permanent IT roles, but we want to keep these staff so we're guaranteeing them the offer of another job with the group."

Unite official John Bancroft said he was disappointed with the news, adding: "We do not believe that the business case for this decision has been made and we are challenging the bank to consider alternative options.

"We will be working to ensure that staff in the bank are offered suitable alternative employment and that their terms and conditions are protected."

Steve Tatlow, the assistant general secretary at Lloyds TSB Group Union, said: "The transfer of yet more jobs to India shows a complete disregard for corporate social responsibility by senior management.

"It shows no hesitation in making redundant the jobs of its existing UK staff merely because it can replace them with lower paid workers in India.

"This is the last thing the country needs at a time of economic instability and is a sign of disloyalty to UK jobs and the UK economy at a time when the financial sector has been going 'cap in hand' to the Government seeking political and financial support.

"The Government's ongoing support should be conditional upon Lloyds TSB showing a genuine commitment to the UK."

As well as Haywards Heath and Brighton, the job cuts will affect offices in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, Bristol, Haywards Heath, Gloucester, Andover and Edinburgh.

The trouble with this is you can never understand them at the other end of the phone and thats why no-one phones them which saves on staff.

...and yet more upward pressure on unemployment ...here we go again!!!

Whilst these people will be "redeployed" within the group that will be 250 other jobs that won't be filled by people from outside of Lloyds.

If you don't like what Lloyds TSB are doing and you bank with them - vote with your feet and leave. There are plenty of banks in this country who only ue UK based staff - eg. First Direct.

Lloyds TSB in Brighton are looking to close all their offices in the city and save money by trying to find a single site in the area. By shipping off the back office, they will need even less space and save even more money...

What Lloyds don't realise is that it is more expensive to offshore to India, Most of the 250 people being redeployed will be required to simplify things for the people in India to understand. They will also find that they will be shipping people over ffrom India for months on end for training and then they will go back to get better paid jobs and they will have to start again with a new batch. Believe me I have been though this.

I will be changing my bank account to a customer friendly bank. Lloyds TSB are just interested in vast profits for the shareholders. Even British Telecom call centre is abroad and I had no idea what he was talking about. He did not know the difference between a hash and star key. I asked him to write a letter confirming but of course it is impossible for any company to write to customers. Three weeks later, I am still waiting for a response to my complaint.

Well, we can expect more calls from LloydsTSB at the times that Coronation Street, Eastenders and any major sporting events are on TV.

I hate Lloyds anyway. I once got a wrong charge on my bank account and when i rang up the North Street, Brighton, branch to complain was told (in a snide voice) that I hardly had much money going through my account so why should they do anything for me?!

I asked the fellow's name and it was some strange surname, so I told him it wouldn't be hard to find that in the phonebook - along with his address. Funnily he went all nice and refunded my charge!

'We want to keep these staff, so we'll be guaranteeing them the offer of another job within the group.' As the whole point of this exercise is to save money, the jobs offered will obviously be at a much lower salary, forcing staff to leave - constructive dismissal.

I was in an Indian restaurant the other evening and I asked the waiter what the chicken tarka on the menu tasted like? He replied that it was like a chicken tikka but a little 'otter!

Surely the biggest worry is the fact that India has a HUGE illegal western account details selling industry, exactly because of places like this.I refuse to use them, not because i have anything against them otherwise, apart from the loss of british jobs etc,but because its common sense not to.The temptation for workers in these call centers to make so much money without being caught is just too great for some.

In my experience the english is usually fine and they are polite enough, but NO WAY would I give these places any of my details.

Lloyds are now using computer generated calls now too. They called our house 3 times in 10 minutes for a payment that had already been made but because its a computer, you couldn't say that to it. I pressed 5 for 'more options' and one of them is to key in another number for them to call you on, so I put 0845 3000000, which is their own 'Personal Customers' number. Th ecomputer accepted that number and should now be happily calling themselves every 5 minutes!

A message to Lloyds Bank and any other British based business that makes its money out of British based consumers; enough is enough, because if you persist in the practice of shipping British jobs out to places like India in order that you can make even more money by using cheap Indian labour and making British people redundant in the process in these difficult times, we the British based consumer will cease to do business with you, you have been warned.

I recently watched the TV documentary which revealed the huge amount of criminal activity being carried out by some British Bank staff and their Indian call centre counterparts, it was very disturbing to watch and resulted in me ceasing to do business with any company which operates its business out of India or any similar badly policed country. Why should our security be put at risk just because these greedy companies want to make even bigger profits?
