More than 300 people will lose their jobs after an airport ground handling firm announced it is closing its Gatwick operation.

Aviance blamed today's decision on "fundamental changes" in its business at the Sussex airport.

It is the latest blow to the Gatwick area's economy, which is reeling from fears over the future of almost 1,000 jobs which have emerged over the last few months.

In February, Barclays moved 250 jobs from Crawley to Milton Keynes. This followed TUI Travel's decision to tell 650 staff they must move to Luton or face redundancy, while more than 100 jobs are under threat at Glaxosmithkline's factory on the town's Manor Royal industrial estate.

Aviance employs 5,000 people at leading airports in the UK and Ireland across a variety of services including ground handling, security, cargo and passenger.

The Gatwick workers affected by the decision will receive help to find other jobs.

...but don't worry our economic fundamentals are sound , we have prudent stability and Crash Gordon has abolished boom and bust.

In reality Crash Gordons boom financed on the back of cheap borrowed money, that he turned a blind eye to and took the credit for, is well and truly over.

Now comes the BUST!

A lot of people are about to get very poor very quickly...and they aren't going to be happy about it.

I don't think we'll see another Liebour Govt again for several generations.

Another case of rubbish reporting! the work hasn't gone just the company doing it, probably because another company out competed them. Another handling company will almost certainly increase its staff by about 300 to cover the gap. Until passenger numbers fall all that changes is who does the work.

Well the people of Crewe seem to agree with me are you saying they are all fools as well-17% swing away from Labour!!?

The news gets worse by the day ...this Govt is finished and Gordon won't be PM by xmas. Capital economics predicts 2.9 Million unemployed by the end of next year.

I see an airline went bust yesterday - Silverjet - not a big one but the first of many and with fuel costs rising do you really think that you are going to continue to get on a plane for pennies for much longer - I don't think so?

I may be a fool but I'm a fool with a job (something I suspect you don't have) a job that I hope to keep and I stand a better chance of keeping it if I vote for anybody but Labour.
