A binman died after he was crushed under the wheels of a dustcart driven by his best friend.

Residents watched in horror today as the dust cart reversed up a residential road, knocking Horsham District Council refuse worker Jason Maguire to the ground and killing him instantly.

Mr Maguire, 34, was working as part of a team of three working in Andrews Road in Southwater, near Horsham, when the accident happened at about 9.20am.

The road was closed until 12.50pm while police tried to work out exactly how the crash happened.

Mr Maguire was an avid fan of Liverpool football club, who idolised Steven Gerrard. His family plan to hold a Liverpool-themed funeral and then later scatter his ashes at the team's Anfield ground.

Liz Kitchen, the leader of Horsham council, said: "This is a tremendous shock to everyone and our deepest sympathies go to his family and colleagues.

"Jason had worked for the council since 2005.

"Full details of the incident are being investigated and we are working with the police and Health and Safety Executive in relation to their enquiries."

Anyone who saw the accident or has information about it should call Sussex Police quoting Operation Hatch.

Leave your tributes to Mr Maguire below.

When you walk through a storm
hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm is a golden sky

And the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind,
Walk on through the rain,
Tho' your dreams be tossed and blown.

Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone,
You'll never, ever walk alone.
Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart

And you'll never walk alone,
You'll never, ever walk alone.
