Terry Parris fears for the future of Lewes.

The Rooks legend is worried about the direction the club are taking after replacing title winning boss Steven King with Albion commercial manager Kevin Keehan.

He acknowledges managing director Martin Elliott and finance director Kevin Powell had to do something to address a lack of finance as they prepare for their first season in Blue Square premier and he has no personal issues with Keehan.

But Parris, who has served the club as player, coach, manager and chairman, believes: l Keehan should have appointed an experienced backroom team l Is flawed in his belief you can build a successful team around Sussex youngsters l May struggle to juggle the combined roles of commercial manager, general manager and football manager l Fears the club could fall apart.

He said: "We knew there would be massive financial implications if we got promoted and there would need to be another source of income. The club and particularly Martin Elliott had to do something "I imagine various options were discussed and the solution they have come up with probably seemed the best at the time.

"There was a state of shock, myself included, with regard to Steve leaving, particularly the timing.

"When you are looking for a new manager you need someone who has managed at a decent level recently, who is familiar with the level of football you are playing at, who has coached and who knows the circuit.

"We took a risk and a gamble when we appointed Steve King but that is completely different to now because Steve was experienced on the circuit with regards to knowing players."

Keehan has asked Terry Graves, who was assistant manager at Peacehaven in the Nineties, to be his No. 2. Former Arsenal assistant Steve Burtenshaw, 72, will help with scouting while Peter Allen, who played for Leyton Orient, will take on some coaching duties.

He hopes to build a team around young Sussex-based players with the likes of Horsham's Tom Graves, Burgess Hill's Ollie Rowland and his own son Joe Keehan, who plays for Worthing, rumoured to be among them.

Parris said: "The key to anybody without experience coming on board would be to have an experienced team around team.

"Kevin brings a lot of experience in other areas but I don't believe you can be commercial manager, general manager and football manager. To do that you need experienced people around you.

"It was always my philosophy as chairman to try to bring Sussex players through where we can and we did that. As we got higher it was impossible to find the players we needed locally to play at the level we wanted and we went outside the county, although not far outside.

"It concerns me that we think we can build a team now on Sussex players.

"I admire Kevin for resigning his job and throwing himself into Lewes Football Club but there is a lot more to it than that. I hope he is successful and I will help him in any way I can.

"I always say in life you have to earn the right. You can't just step into a position or buy a position, you have to earn the right. We have worked extremely hard to get where we are. The last thing we want to do is to undo all the good work that has been done.

"We had big friendlies at the start of last season which generated income and we need to continue to do that. We also need to continue to generate income through the gate. If we are not successful will that have a big impact on our gates? I hope we don't underestimate the level we are playing at."

Is Terry Parris right to be concerned?

yes of course, the club have lost their heart , if team starts badly, the fans will not turn up, and those that do will turn on the manager the board etc, the gareth barrys and alike can come for a free lunch, but the players he has already signed do not fill me will confidence the team will be better than last year, one question ! what happens if lewes get relegated? will the money promised suddenly leave the club? that could mean the club plummet two divisions, or worse. keehan may have conections, but will he have a team spirit? or fans turning up? some big signings are needed in the next week or so, this will attract better players to join, having seen his son play, he in my oppinion is not up to conference level, he was hardly in the worthing side . however good luck to the lewes, i feel they will need some to survive.

If hes thinking of signing Joe Keehan he must make him lose weight if hes going to have any chance!!

Title winning players, good enough to have kept Lewes up in the confernec premier wont even answer their phones to Keehan. Thats how much he's thought of.
Come of owners of Lewes FC admit youve made a huge mistake, get this clown out of town and install a proper manager before theres no hope of staying up.

The players they've signed so far seem to be decent county league 1 players, and, at best, a level or two above (though I'm not actually basing this on having seen them all play, just speaking to others who have and from reading reports in the Argus, so please correct me if I'm wrong).

Unless another 10 - 15 conference standard players are signed (and by this, I mean players who have experience of playing in league 1 and 2 for professional clubs, players who have played before in the conference or the very best players who have played just below the conference and who really stood out at that level), then Lewes are heading towards being the equivalent of Derby in the Premiership.

I hope I'm proved wrong with all this but it seems to me the board are taking a huge risk with all that they, the players, the club, the fans and Steven King have worked so hard to achieve during the last 6-years or so.

Being an avid follower of sussex football the omens do not look good!!!
Do the Lewes board not understand that unless AT least half the squad need to have some experience of playing in the conference?
The phrase "Lambs to the slaughter" comes to mind and you only have to look at Derby County to see what that means!!!
What a waste of all the hard work last seasons squad and Steve King achieved.
The lewes board should hang their head in shame at starting to dismantle one of the greatest achievements in Sussex Football.
The signings so far do not inspire any confidence and |'m sure the Lewes fans will be shaking their heads at the appointment of a Manager who has no recent experience and and an assistant who has only managed in the county league!!!
It pains me to say but Lewes will finish rock bottom and barely manage to scrape double figures in points!!!
I'm sure Steve King is thinking"why did I bother"!!!!!!

One word - goosed! Ollie Rowlands is a good player with passion and heart and no small amount of talent while Joe Keehan has not appeared to be a player that can play at Conference level in the games I have seen. The same can be said about Dan Beck. Signing a number of Bognor players doesn't seem the greatest tactic for Conference Premier. I'm sure there are some bigger names just around the corner......??????

This is like a pub singer who, by bringing in his own gear and his 'connections' in the biz, suddenly thinks he can be a pro - mix with the 'stars'. The amount of delusion here is staggering. Looks like Eastbourne Boro are going to be the BS Prem club of choice next season instead of the promise and what was at the Pan. 'Going Down' and 'Pan' are going to become bedfellows next term.
