Ian Chapman has quit Albion in protest at the removal of Dean Wilkins as manager.

The Seagulls stalwart has decided his position in the backroom team is untenable after the club reappointed Micky Adams in place of Wilkins 12 days ago.

Adams tried to persuade the 37-year-old former long-serving left-back to stay. He said: "I spoke to Ian and told him to think long and hard about it but he had made his mind up.

"Obviously, with Dean not being manager any more he felt a little bit uncomfortable about it all and you have to expect that.

"He has certainly got no axe to grind with me. We are sorry to see him go and we thank him for his services."

Chapman had been both first team coach and reserve team boss since leaving Whitehawk as manager last summer.

He was part-time in the combined role last season but became full-time this season after giving up his job at the County League club.

Wilkins has yet to decide whether to accept the position of senior first team coach but the rest of the backroom staff have told Adams they are happy to remain in their posts.

Adams met with chief scout Barry Lloyd yesterday as he begins the task of assembling a squad capable of mounting a promotion challenge in League One.

Adams believes his recruitment drive has been aided by the five months he spent scouting for Stoke after relinquishing his role as assistant manager of Colchester in January.

He said: "My remit for Stoke was team scouting reports but also individual stuff as well.

"That took me all around the country, so I have got good knowledge of what is out there.

"Although you are working for somebody else, you always keep an eye out for players at the sort of level you might come back at.

"It worked out well for both of us. In the last six weeks I have been doing foreign stuff as well for Tony (Pulis). I have been to St Etienne, Monaco and Denmark.

"It's a global market now. I know Barry has been out and seen a lot of foreign players. We may or may not go down that avenue but at least we have a knowledge of it."

Meanwhile, the squad freshening process has been launched at the inexperienced end of the scale with the award of one-year professional contracts to striker Kane Louis, midfielders Dan Royce and Kane Wills and defender Andy Pearson.

The four other second-year scholars, Zac Beda, Lee Bryant, Matt Foreman and Ruben French, have all been released.

Shane McFaul, one of the players released by Albion at the end of the season, has re-signed for University College Dublin.

Thank you Ian for all you have done for the club, both as a player and your recent service as coach and support to Dean. Fully understand your reasons you will be sadley missed in more ways than one.

Its about time the club recognised your services and gave you the testimonal rewards that you have never received.

Good luck in all you do.

Ian Chapman - a true Brighton man with knowledge, loyalty and principles. Well done Ian, it's just a shame that there aren't more men at the top of our club who hold the same values. I wish you and DW all the best and thank you both for all that you have done.

its hard to believe the way pr is used in nearly everything, its clear that MA did not want chapman or wilkins, as he made it known both would operate under white! hardly fair , but put with some spin it sounds fair!, wilkins will not take the job, as for the club taking on 50% of youth players to be given a contract seems strange when that side hardly did anything. pearson looks good . the rest is unbelievable, more rich kid contracts. MA CAN STRUT THE PR, but everyone knows the fans wont except anything but promotion this season.

All the very best Ian.
Football, however, is entertainment for the fans. Faces come & go. Fans love their football and the game. Personnally, I would love to have opportunties come our way that would make BHAFC a real competative force. If this means making personnel changes that the Board deem right, so be it. Life is harsh. Look at Avran Grant, 2nd in the league, added to possible Champions league success, but, will he have a job at Chelsea next season. He reads about this everyday in the press and it must hurt. This is football today.

yes but the club are ruthless in the persuit of success, (chelsea) we on the other hand pay wages to the likes of loft white hinshlewood, hinshlewood senior, and so on, this based on who you know, not on your ability, remember pompey sacked hinshlewood, as they said he lacked the drive to take them where they wanted to be, that was ten years ago, to see pompey constantly on tv this weekend reminds me of where the albion should be, we are about the same size in terms of area, fan base, and location, but they again are ruthless in the persuit of success, there is no space for sentiment or pity at this level, half amillion was wasted on paying players who should never been given contracts. when fans will never accept anything but passion from the players we will be there or there abouts.

Posted the following on the other Argus Chapman story - Adding this here and saying this will be my last post. Sorry.
Hmmm... I believe I was being ridiculed when I broke this story on the 13th. Here's another. The pace in the corridors of power has quickened today. I overheard someone say 'They've resigned'. Who, I don't know. Odds are good it Wilko though. Not sure who the other is as I understand White is staying. Like the Chapman story, maybe they will try and talk whoever it of out of the decision. Although after over a week of trying that tactic didn't work with Chappers. Personally I admire Ian for doing what he has done. Integrity is in short supply in football these days. I hope it works out well for him. Oh, and I'm pretty sure Harty coming back on a shortish deal.

I was just asking how you Brighton fans think you will raise the money as you still think it will be built. I wanted a good laugh at the suggestions. Dean and Chappers are both really decent blokes and good players in their time.Unfortunately,a
s a team mixed with Dean White they have given out an air of "Happy to be here, lets not take it too seriously though".
They were a stop gap, knew it,and enjoyed it to the full.Micky Adams would have been well aware of that, and of the fact that so many of their "Mates'" kids were being fast-tracked through the system.
I think they did really well to finish where they did,but Dick Knight has worked with the real deal and would have spotted their amateurism.
Still some brownie points on their CV's,but neither White,Wilkins or Chapman will be entertained at another professional club.Expect to see them around the non-league Sussex scene though.

It fascinates me how so many of you feel qualified to comment on Ian Chapman. You do not know the man or the lifestyle that he follows. I don't either but what I do know for a fact is that if you want to comment on lifestyles the most successful time that our club expereinced was when the likes of Case, Grealish, Foster and Co. drank most nights, coming in a few hours before training began. They were a great set of lads who played hard both on and off the pitch. If you you have nothing to offer but unfounded critism and slander I suggest you refrain from voicing your unfounded opinions. You really have no idea about the physce of footabllers or the professional game.

Well said Liam - I wonder how many of the people posting comments about Ian Chapman have even spoken to him or know anything about the things that have gone on behind the doors of the club. What has happened is known by those in the club, the knives, lies and "going on's" are known by those who have taken part. But Chappers, Wilkins have not commented about any of that.

As noted in a previous post Ian Chapman has not commented about anything - it is the club who have confirmed that he has resigned.

As far as being a coach and not being up to the job - Whithawk achieved more with him in recent years. They did not do so well this year did they?

Time will prove a lot of things both in the club and outside of it but will anyone who has posted comments here admit they are wrong I very much doubt it
