Adams wants six new players

Albion chief Micky Adams is aiming to sign six new players with League One or Championship experience.

Areas he is targeting include wingers and utility players like the out-of-contract Adam El-Abd.

Adams, outlining his blueprint for squad strengthening, revealed: "We have got probably 12 or 13 you would class as first team squad members and I am hoping to add another six to them, not necessarily older players but players that have experienced League One or the Championship.

"We are looking at all areas and out wide is one I will be looking to strengthen for sure, with a little bit of pace. My teams generally like to get into the last third of the pitch and get crosses into the box.

"Within those 12 or 13 players we are still waiting on an answer from Adam El-Abd. That might be key because Adam can play in a few positions.

"It could well be that we will bring in a couple of players that can play in a number of positions. When you are looking at smaller squads that is important at this level."

El-Abd is on holiday and Adams is yet to speak to him but he will honour the new deal offered to the Brighton-born powerhouse prior to his reappointment as manager at the expense of Dean Wilkins.

"The two-year deal is on the table for him and that hasn't changed since I got here," Adams said. "Obviously, I would like an answer sooner rather than later so that I can plan."

Adams believes Albion already possess some of the qualities which helped Swansea to the League One title. He will build his team around a formidable backbone provided by the likes of Michel Kuipers, Nicky Forster, Glenn Murray, Tommy Elphick and Joel Lynch.

"I saw most of the top teams in the division last year, including Swansea, and a lot of the attributes they had we have got here to a certain degree,î he said.

"They had a strong core through the middle of the pitch with the goalkeeper, two centre halves, Bodde in midfield and then the centre forwards that were scoring goals, Jason Scotland in particular. That spine was key to it all.

"We need a little bit of strengthening in a certain area through the spine of the team and a bit more strength in depth."

Who would you like to see Micky Adams sign?

steven gillespie from cheltenham. Would fire us into the championship

I think the reason Wilkins is delaying his answer is because he is still trying to take the knife out of his back.

I thought El-Abd was not able to sign his new contract because he was so focused on trying to get fit for the Bristol Rovers game? Now he's on holiday? Of course it's not about money. Why would we ever think that?

dream on! richards is not signing and dw has gone. El-Abd is back from his holiday and is insulted by the offer on the table - I hope he finds better! Brighton is a joke and treats its home grown players as such - no respect creates bad feeling lucky escape for those released.

Get the lad S.G. from Cheltenham. He's ideal for this club and he is a constant thorn in our side whenever we play them. If we don't then others will.

I think he should sign Kit Napier or Gerry Armstrong or, failing that, that Portuguese bloke - Ronaldo is it?

What a marvellous lil' ray of sunshine you are. How can you say our home-grown players are treated badly? At least a lot of 'em get extended runs in the 1st team - which is more than I can say for any Premiership team. Do you support one perchance?

We have eleven first team players and the rest are of Conference standard!

With twenty players aged under 25 and fifteen aged 21 or under what we need is experience as only Kuipers, Thomson and Forster can be termed experienced players.

Utility player? That's another word for jake of all trades master of none!

What do we need wingers for as we have Robinson and Cox?

We have 23 contracted players at the moment and with the six new signings the squad could be as large as 29, one bigger than last season! Why do we need 29 players when other teams in the division manage fine with just 22?

If we sign six players how many games are Sullivan, Hinshelwood, Pearson, Loft, Fogden, Royce, Wilis, Chamberlain, Gatting, Dixon, Louis and Gargan going to play next season?

Andy - Forget Currie or Kanchelskis as they are too old.

We don't need six new players four will suffice. The players we should sign are:

Matt Richards
Ian Westlake
Peter Leven
Steven Gillespie

So Martyn-we have wingers in Robinson and Cox do we?

Both given plenty of opportunities to prove themselves but both showed to be less than consistent. A vocal section of Albion fans kept calling for Robinson to be played more often-he got the chance and frequently did his Invisible Man impersonation.

I hope Adams brings in 2 wingers who play for 90 minutes-God knows we need them. However, if Robinson and Cox respond to a totally different management style they could be useful. It is down to them.

DW has gone? When did that happen?

So Brighton treats its home grown players as a joke? What a fool you are.

Do you think Robinson, Cox, El Abd, Lynch, Elphick, Frasier, Fogden and others have been treated as a joke? You clearly haven't got a clue about The Albion. Stick to your cross-stitching and leave us all alone.

You are an idiot. We spent £300k on a striker in the transfer window. Money is there to spend otherwise I doubt Micky would have returned.

Why don't we wait until we sign someone before moaning?

The only reason the 4 youngsters were offered 1 year contracts was to help the club fulfill the reserve fixtures. It is well known amongst the coaching staff (who aren't that subtle )that they were the "best" of a very poor bunch.Pearson too small for a centre half and doesn't read the game that well,Louis and Wills too small for midfielders.Hope next seasons crop are better.

At last! We are actualy going to play with some width. Does that mean signing a left sided winger tather than sticking right footed cox out there, having to constantly having to cut back in which opposing teams sused out 1/3 in to the season and stifled him! Thank you Micky, lets hope the "play it through the middle every time" or the famous "Butters HOOF" are now behind us

Even if that is true, I am amazed that anyone in the coaching staff would tell you and it is a disgrace to put that on here. Why do people have to be so negative? They have been given one year deals to see how they develop. Some will do well, while others won't get another contract.

That is great. We have such loyal trusting fans! Have you noticed that Adams is the one with the contract not you? That is because he is a manager and you are a fan. If Adam rejects the contract mabey Mickey Adams will offer a better one! Have faith or stop supporting the Albion, a club that relies on the fans for support!

I can't believe that MA's bum has hardly touched the managers chair and people and b!tching already!! What a sad bunch of people you are. Here's an idea, wait to see who he signs, what they play like and how are pre-season games go before jumping to ill-researched conclusions. I for one can't wait to get next season underway, everything is looking up, MA has said championship before Falmer is built (Although that probably gives him a 50yr window to achieve it!), great new(ish) manager, old players out which frees up alot of wages for fresh blood, the sun is shining and I feel good people! Has anyone noticed that Gold isn't happy at Birmingham City anymore? Just a thought. . . .

We do not have a left-back at the club and could do with some cover there.

Do other clubs only have 22 players? I am sure you will find a lot of them have young pro's on their books boosting numbers.

I normally am quite pleased when the season ends and we can have a bit of a break from football but this year I am looking forward to seeing some decent football in the next season. The last few months under Wilkins have been poor and this made me think several times about renewing the season ticket but I am confident that Micky will bring in the right people to get us out of the division. Why DW didn't get rid of the grossly over rated Jake Robinson I do not know - hopefully with a better manager he will finally after many years prove to be reasonably worthwhile

Common sense pervails under this man! Who the f*ck has a team of 22 players? I have a great idea! Lets be fans and back the team no matter what! If we have a pre-DK board the OK insult the board but notice how we havn't sold any major assets like we did the goldstone! Get off the managments back and start being a fan not a critic!!!

Looks like Adams is trying to do the same as last time by brining in experienced players. It would help to see some men play instead of kids.

If he wants League 1 and Championship experience, why is Lloyd swaning off abroad?

For goodness sake, let’s give MA and the board our full support. Chapman has been a servant to the club, but unfortunately his transition in to a "Coaching" role has not been successful, nor has he acted with the professionalism that is required at a football club at this level. White should now be fired as he is, again; not what is required at an "Important" football club like Brighton. Dean Wilkins however, is a very talented coach, who is professional and is a good man. It would be an honour for this club, if Dean were to stay and would benefit the club massively. With the right signings we could have a fantastic season. I would however sleep a lot easier, when I see shovels pounding the earth in Falmer. Time for an update from the club I think.

Currie, Cullip, Brooker and Virgo - stop living in the past!

Jules - why do we need SIX strikers?

Vokes is wanted by Wolves, Aston Villa and Newcastle so there is absolutely no chance of Brighton signing him!

Why do we want an injury prone striker like Bowditch?

Six new signings is hugely optimistic IMHO.

We don't need more than two players per position which is twenty two players.

The problem with the current squad is that just over half of them are not up to first team standard!

I see the voice of the muppets is back-spouting sh1t again.

When will you get it into that dormant organ between your ears that a club losing £2 MILLION + a year do not make a profit when selling players.

You have to be the most moronic female ever to voice an opinion about football. Don't you have some ironing or washing up to do instead of coming on here?

Posted by: Bill, Brighton on 10:37pm Wed 21 May 08
Adams wouldn't be making statements like this if he hadn't been promised sufficient funds to buy/pay the wages of new players. The board have clearly got a new sense of ambition and recognise that they've got to give the fans something to cheer about if they want Falmer filled.
Posted by: Jules, brighton on 11:43pm Wed 21 May 08
Sorry I should have made myself clearer, I'm not advocating signing all of these players but these are players for consideration, Sam Vokes is probably wishful thinking I know and I just thought it interesting Cullip turning down Gillingham. martyn I don't think a squad of 22 is enough an dI would say MA has pitched it about right around the 26-28 mark. One last point I think thre is likely to be investment in the pipeline. Remember we spent the money we received in January from transfers and it didn't go straight to legal challenges and debt consolidation as it had in the past.

Jules - A squad of 22 is more than enough if you get rid of all the deadwood which we STILL HAVEN'T DONE (we have only added four more to it)!

What is the point of having 23 players of whom 12 players are not up to first team standard and probably never will be?

If you have more than 22 players there will be some who don't even play reserve team football!

Players are not robots. Some are not ready for first team football at this level. That is why we farm players out to Bognor or Worthing etc. The first year pro's are not likely to feature much this season - fule changes means that they are on a two year scholarship and are not the finshied product straight away. A 22 man squad would be suicide.

To be honest I can't see anyone with ambition wanting to join a team based in a portacabin, the Albion are going to loose droves of fans to the new conference clubs unless MA picks things up very quickly and only brings in real quality. Grant Horscroft or Kevin Bremner for example.

Paul - Elphick, Lynch, Cox, Fraser, Robinson and El-Abd have proved that if you are good enoug you're old enough!

The simple fact is that Sullivan, Hinshelwood, Pearson, Loft, Chamberlain, Fogden, Royce, Willis, Dixon, Gatting, Gargan and Louis aren't good enough!

If these players cannot attract a bigger club than Worthing or Bognor on loan they won't ever make it anyway.

These players shouldn't have been offered a contract in the first place unless they were good enough to play for the first team!

I'd rather have 22 quality players than 17 good players and 12 rubbish players. By opting for quantity we are sacrificing quality!
Posted by: Get rid of the deadwood on 7:54pm Thu 22 May 08
The only reason we need more players is because we have a dozen or so players who aren't good enough and who NEVER play in the first team! What is the point in keeping these players? It's better to have 6/7 less players but a better quality of players overall. If the four new pros aren't part of the first team why have they been offered contracts?
Posted by: Get rid of the deadwood on 8:17pm Thu 22 May 08
Even if injuries strike it is not as if the first year pros or Sullivan, Chamberlain and Gargan will play anyway as Brighton will sign someone on loan instead!

I guarantee that between them Sullivan, Hinshelwood, Pearson, Loft, Chamberlain, Fogden, Royce, Willis, Dixon, Gatting, Gargan and Louis won't make 50 appearences next season!
