Virgo could play up front

Adam Virgo could be used as a stop-gap centre forward again by Albion.

Virgo's goals kept the Seagulls in the Championship three seasons ago after Mark McGhee pushed him up front from defence.

Micky Adams is prepared to do the same in League One this season now Virgo has rejoined Albion on a free transfer from Celtic, following loan stints with Colchester and Coventry.

Adams revealed: "Centre forward is absolutely an option again. That is the position I recommended him in to Colchester.

"He scored a goal for me for Coventry at Leeds as a centre forward. It would be silly of me to pin down a position for him because he is so versatile and he is such a good character.

"Give him a shirt and he will try his best for you in any position. Maybe that has worked against him at other clubs but I think Albion fans and I realise that, what ever position he plays in, he is going to give his all."

Virgo regards centre half as his main position but he is happy for Adams to exploit his versatility if needed.

Which is Virgo's best position? Give us your views below.

Like i said before i think he'll be cover for all sorts of positions. Especially for when andrew whing picks up his inevitable ban for yellow cards.

Virgs achieved cult status at Albion for his goal that sent us to Cardiff and that season when his goals kept us up, not for his defending where his lack of pace is a problem. We already have better defenders on the books but are short of quality competition and cover up front, especially a big man since Baz left

gatting yes
gargan and robinson no way. robinson is used as a midfielder now and gargan looks a phisical presence. loft is a very good player when fit

Average player. Did well as a forward all the time teams did not know what to expect. Only ever a stop-gap though.

The bigger worry for me is that with Adams signing Virgo and Hawkins and reportedly narrowly missing out on Frank Sinclair are we about to flog one of our bright prospects in Lynch of Elphick?

Also, perhaps Virgo may be used on the right of a back three OR as a right-back. Adams must have worked with Whing at Coventry and he did not exactly enjoy the best of times there.
Would be a shame if Whing got edged out as he is a superb right back.

Virgo for me is a good player to have on the bench.

Glad I am not the only one who rates Doug Loft, he can be a class act. We are so short of central midfielders at the moment, we need to sign atleast one, preferrably two. I think Cox will be used in the middle more by Micky, McLeod on the left and Jake on the right. I don't rate Thomson, I'd rather have Cox and Loft in the centre.

Reid was better than Loft, Loft is rubbish! Lets try and make at least ten thousand out of him though in january...

Cox and Loft in the middle!!!
Thomson is a class act and will show his worth this season - i'm surprised he hasn't been touted as a potential captain.
I agree we need another midfielder though - what about Isaac Osbourne, surplus to requirements at Cov??

Terence, Brighton says...
11:48am Thu 3 Jul 08

COX AND LOFT IN THE CENTRE WOULD BE MUCH TOO LIGHTWEIGHT IN THE CENTRE, WE NEED A BALL WINNER AND A CREATIVE TYPE PLAYER, AND COXY DEFFO FITS THE CREATIVE TYPE PLAYER, AND ALL WE HAVE AT PRESENT IS EL-ABD OR THOMSON ALONGSIDE HIM, SHAME WE DIDN'T GET BERTIN, AS HE WAS VERY GOOD, BUT HE DID MESS US AROUND, BUT MAYBE LET BYGONES BE BYGONES, AS HE'D PRETTY MUCH BE THE FINAL PIECE OF THE JIGSAW, AND WE'D DEFFO BE CONTENDERS FOR THE TITLE!

i agree with most of that but steve thomson is a class act. also even if we didn't play thomson nd have loft with cox it would not work because there both attacking. anyone else heard bout us going back for alexis bertin? we are also reportidly after clive platt and izale mcleod

thats not true - he was fantastic that year where-ever he played and was a good defender.

I know we tend to write players off at the Albion if they're not championship standard at 20 but Loft is only 21. Its not unfathomable that people at the club who watch him day in day out may see something? Besides, he looked really good against Swansea on the last day of the season. Give the guy a break!

Richard, Hastings says...

Don't forget Tommy Fraser. I thought he showed glimpses of some real promise last season.

Cant expect him to play 40 games yet but should certainly continue his progress nicely.

Would have been nice to pair Dean Hammond and George O'Callaghan in the middle.

Oh well, thanks Dick.

Great to see Virgs back at the Albion. I think if we bring one or two more player of quality we stand a really good chance at promotion. I would like to see Therry Racon back at the Albion. Thought he showed some real quality when I saw him!

Now Livermore has signed, how about a left back and a creative midfielder?

Cox is not the answer in the middle of the park. I expect him to play right wing.

Chris McPhee ON A FREE!!

Yet more incompetence from the board as a quality player slips through our fingers. Why are we spending our time chasing players like Virgo while GENUINE quality is slipping through our fingers.

KNIGHT OUT!

I am surprised by this too. Its a fact that Adams rates McPhee, he was almost an ever present in his side up front with Zamora (and setting up countless numbers of goals). I can only think that McPhee sees Weymouth as a move forward, as opposed to going back to his former club.

Where does all this nonsense about Lynch and Elphick making big money moves away from the club keep coming from? If we are to make progress, as we seem to be trying to be achieving in the transfer market; how can we on the other hand, cash in on our two most prized assets. In fact, if we are genuinely trying to build something important why would we? Surely MA doesn’t want to loose the backbone of his side? Is this just a case of more "mischievous" reporting against Brighton?

Martyn, says...
6:59pm Thu 3 Jul 08

I sincerely hope Elphick and Lynch remain at the club as they are our two best centre backs.

As for Virgo he is a useful signing as he can cover a number of positions. I can see him covring or even challegning Whing for right-back whilst also providing cover for the centre back and striking positions.

I consider Virgo to be our third choice striker now. I think there is more chance of Virgo scoring than Gatting, Dixon, Gargan and Louis put together!

Can someone please why we promoted Gargan who scored 20 goals for the reserves and youth team and Louis who scored 10 when Gatting scored 30 and cannot score for the first team?

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Gatting, Gargan, Dixon and Louis fail to score a single goal between them next season!

I agree with Richard Fraser did show glimpses of real promise last season.

Surely Livermore and Thomson will start in central midfield.

Can't see us signing Racon as he will be out of our price range.

As for Loft he is rubbish and doesn't deserve to still be here!

I expect Robinson to be mainly used next season as an impact substitution.

martyn, you consistently spout half baked and ill informed facts. but at least you're consistent in you're rubbish.

I'd forgotten about Fraser, I actually rate that guy, he could become a major player for us. Livermore's a cracking signing, he really is. Class act for us. We do still need a left back though, all these new signings are talking about being able to cover there, we need to sign an actual full back.
Other than that I'm happy!
I was lucky enough to be at the Withdean a couple of years ago to see our youth team beat Chelsea's, and Gatting looked a player that night amongst his own age group. He can do it in the first team, but we shouldn't expect 10-15 goals from him, that would be stupid. He'll break through in his own time, as for Kane Louis, I can't speak because I've not seen him, but again, we can't expect much from him. And I don't think we should expect much more from Dixon than what we got last season, he didn't play enough to have an impact.
Same with Loft, I really do rate that guy, after seing his performance against Swansea I thought then he deserved another year, and I still think it. He's potentially a good player, I'm glad we kept him.

Kuipers, Whing, Elphick, Virgo, Lynch, Cox, Thomson, Livermore, McLeod, Forster, Murray. League 1, watch yourselves! :)
