Police object to Brighton bars' plans to open until 6am
12:30pm Tuesday 23rd October 2012 in News
Bars in Brighton are pushing to stay open until as early as 6am over the Halloween weekend.
Police fear two city centre venues could be flooded by revellers looking to continue their nights until the early hours of the morning.
Bar Synergy in Middle Street and Vavavoom in the Old Steine want to open until 6am and 5.30am on Saturday, October 27.
The Middle Street venue, which caters for up to 110 drinkers at a time, also hopes to stay open until 6am on Sunday.
Both venues have applied to Brighton and Hove City Council for temporary event licences.
But Brighton’s top policeman, Chief Superintendent Graham Bartlett, has written to both licensing committees, urging that they refuse to let the bars stay open later.
The venues are located in Brighton’s drinking heartland – the Cumulative Impact Area (CIA) – where there is a high number of licensed premises and restrictions on later openings.
In a report to the council, released ahead of a meeting, Ch Supt Bartlett said if only a few bars were open past 4am, as proposed, there was a risk of a “flood of persons wishing to continue on with their night going on to this venue with the potential for crime and disorder due to this influx.”
Objecting to both bars’ appeals to stay open later than usual, he said allowing them to stay open later would “undermine the licensing objectives of prevention of crime and disorder”.
A decision will be made on both bars today.

People don't rush to Vavavoom after Revenge they go to Bar Revenge round the corner, or Legends up the road.
It will have no effect whatsoever on people living nearby for ONE night at Halloween especially given that most of the buildings next to it are offices for chiropracters / IT companies and Language Schools etc etc!

its teenagers and early 20 somethings that want to stay out this late drinking and they are the core group causing problems in the city with anti social behaviour and violence, so No they should not open later, this sort of drinker needs to get the message this city is not for them and let other residents and tourists enjoy a night out.
I'm 30, work long hours in the week, and dont really get a huge amount of time to let my hair down.
Nothing worse than having to leave a perfectly reasonable and friendly establishment with other like-minded customers because the licence says so.
It's not a permanent request for a change of licence, just a single night in which most people are in good spirits, respect the local area and pay our taxes. Door staff wont let disruptive people in the bars/clubs at 10pm, let alone 3,4 or 5am.
Tarring everyone with the same brush is a very closed minded and bigoted view to have. Jog on!

And why do places want special dispensation to open later for it? They're getting an extra hour from when the clocks go back already!

I really can't see any justification for any bar staying open until anywhere near 6am!! 3 am at a maximum is more than adequate surely??
