Rottingdean roadworks lead to five-mile detour

Drivers face a five-mile detour to travel less than half a mile.
Work upgrading gas pipes means traffic trying to get to the coast road from Rottingdean will be diverted through Whitehawk for four weeks.
The work, which is part of a £225,000 project to fit new plastic gas pipes, involves closing the road at The Green between the junction at Falmer Road down to the junction at Dean Court Road for two weeks from Saturday.
Anyone wanting to get from Rottingdean to the A259, Marine Drive, will have to head north along Falmer Road and then west down Warren Road.
The diversion will send motorists south through Whitehawk on Wilson Avenue to join Marine Parade at Black Rock.
The second phase of the project will begin on Saturday, November 10 when the works will move to Vicarage Lane. The road will be closed between Whiteway Lane and High Street for another two weeks, with three-way temporary traffic lights installed in The Green at its junction with Falmer Road and Dean Court Road.
She added: “I have had talks with Southern Gas Networks to ensure that the residents have been consulted and any problems have been addressed.
“There will be problems with increased traffic but I am satisfied that the area will be able to manage.”
Frank Considine, from Rottingdean Parish Council, who has previously suggested turning High Street into a pedestrian-only zone, said it was unfortunate that there would be road closures and diversions.
Alan Thompson, the construction manager for Southern Gas Networks, said all work was being carried out in close consultation with Brighton and Hove City Council and that staff would be doing all they could to minimize disruption.
He said: “I would like to apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused by our work. We understand that people can get frustrated by roadworks, however the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years.
“This means that when the work is complete, people will continue to enjoy the benefits of a safe and secure gas supply for years to come.”
