Forget about Ascot and Epsom – the biggest event of the horse-racing calendar in Sussex starred junior jockeys.

Twelve trusty mounts lined up side-by-side for the 1.35pm race on Monday, jockeys astride their beloved steeds.

But there could only be one winner of the Shetland Pony Gold Cup at Plumpton Racecourse, near Lewes, and it was tiny, shaggy-haired Goring Hotel, ridden by young Bradley Kent.

The event was held in aid of The Moorcroft Racehorse Welfare Centre in Lindfield, near Haywards Heath.

Olympian Tina Cook, from Findon, near Worthing, is a patron of the centre, which looks after retired racehorses.

The afternoon of races, including the Shetland Pony Gold Cup, raised about £50,000.
