Brighton roundabout under review

Householders are to have their say on planned changes to a controversial roundabout.
Brighton and Hove City Council is looking to improve Seven Dials, to the north of Brighton Station.
The local authority claims it will increase road safety while making the area look nice.
But residents are coming together to ensure any changes do not have a knock-on effect on neighbouring roads.
They will meet in the old Xuma bar at the roundabout on Tuesday, October 30 at 8pm to discuss the project.
This is separate to council staff holding an outdoor exhibition the same day 3pm to 8pm, on the corner of Dyke Road to the south of the roundabout.
The consultation ends next Friday.

Lots of concerns about Lewes Road scheme but not enough people completed forms to say so.... now it appears (or can be spun) into overwhelming support....

How are we to set an example for our children that it is always safest to use a proper crossing with this sort of crazy free for all?
That the scheme is intended to congest and delay traffic as much as possible while displacing hordes along local side streets is a given.
As pointed out above, you must object strongly to this now if there is to be any chance of averting this catastrophe.
Similarly, there is only until 30 October to formally object to the traffic order for the Lewes Road buss lane fiasco, so get writing now.

Single lane Dyke Road entrance to the Dials... so longer queues, more congestion, more pollution... as if the queues up Dyke Road don't already stretch as far as the petrol station thanks to the greens' retiming of the lights at Old Shoreham Road.
Still have the stupid pedestrian crossings right on each blind corner! Unbelievable! So much for improving safety!
And someone has paid a lot of money to someone to design this rubbish.
This is only going to make things much, much worse. Typical Green policy then!

So, how do cars that usually use Vernon/Montpellier get down to the seafront/Western Rd? Either by turning neighbouring streets into ratruns or joining the queue past Brighton station? Or by going back to Hove and down Grand Avenue?
Wow, these Greens really are doing their utmost to stop cars getting into town. Time to stop them before they kill this City once and for all.

I'm amazed that the 7 dials has worked as well as it has for so long - I've only seen the odd accident there - a real miracle!
Saw one car zoom across today in front of everyone - amazing he got away with it, but he was lucky!

I was there today and tried to take a short cut up the side of the Good companions pub just to find some council **** have stopped cars turning right - so had to do a u-turn and rejoin long queue of traffic. A great deal of us in the area use this junction - but I'm sure not everyone uses the junction in all roles - Personally, as a resident in the area, (driver/pedestrian/c
yclist) I use the junction often and I've often been frustrated (in the capacity of a pedestrian), trying to navigate the 7 dials. Particularly if one is trying to go directly across the junction, from say, dyke road to dyke road (north/south) you have to navigate through up to 3 pedestrian crossings, (4 depending on which side of the street you want to end up on)
This, for me, is nonsense - and leads to some pedestrians attempting to cross directly over the roundabout with the traffic, which is crazy in it's own right, but not without logic. It's the most direct route... vehicles/bikes have that option so why not pedestrians?
Which is why I welcome proposals to change the junction. But don't agree with the current proposal as it still gives priority to vehicles.
Also, as others here have pointed out, this current proposal provides a potential 'free for all' - which has huge safety implications.
I've often pondered the logic of the siting of the pedestrian crossings, on (as someone else said) blind corners - they should be brought closer to the junction - again, why do pedestrians lose out in terms of priority and have to walk 10 - 20 meters up each road in order to cross?
In my mind, 3 things could happen at this junction with very little public money spent and very little disruption...
1. Reduce the speed limit on all approaches to 20MPH
2. Paint Cross hatching on the entire roundabout (making it a box junction)
2. Remove all barriers
3. Change Pelican crossings so that one button press would activate ALL crossings to turn RED to traffic
This will have the effect that very little changes, except ALL traffic is stopped at once - and ALL Pedestrians can cross the junction completely arbitrarily, to which ever side they wish.
The Montpellier Road Junction at Waitrose/Taj/Madhatt
er has this type of crossing, where you can cross diagonally - which is very useful as a pedestrian...
This solution could be tried for a while, see how it goes and if it's unsucessful revert it.
