Brighton and Hove's homeless population set to rise

The number of people becoming homeless will continue to grow over the next two years as welfare reforms bite, a housing chief has warned.

Andy Winter, the chief executive of Brighton Housing Trust (BHT), said the charity’s services were under increasing pressure.

Its First Base day centre, which was refurbished earlier this year, was expected to see 30 people per day but regularly more than twice as many people have visited for help.

The Argus revealed yesterday that Brighton’s numerous agencies are all at capacity or have seen an increase in clients, according to a survey.

Yesterday BHT director of advice John Holmstrom spoke at a conference in London about the way Brighton and Hove deals with homelessness.

Mr Winter said: “We’re hearing what’s happening elsewhere in the country and there is a lack of commitment, involvement and engagement by other local authorities.

“We’re here because people look at Brighton and Hove as a model of good practice.

“The number of rough sleepers has massively increased over the last two years and that is only going to get bigger over the next two years as the welfare reforms bite.

"There is a wide acceptance that the situation this year is worse than last, and that was much worse than the year before.”

Despite increasing numbers of people needing help, Mr Winter said there was excellent provision for homeless people in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings, where BHT alone dealt with 11,000 people last year.

The city’s new No Second Night Out worker, employed in April, picks up people as soon as they start rough sleeping in Brighton and puts them into temporary accommodation.

New projects also see homeless people picked up if they are admitted to hospital.

The charity coordinates the city’s severe weather shelters, which open when temperatures drop below zero, and runs a hostel in the city.

Priority needs to be given to locals. Most of the people that ask me for money do not have a local Dialect.
Brighton is a soft touch for these people find out where they have come from and give them a oneway ticket back.

Don't bleedin' well make an announcement like that FFS! It can only serve to act as an open invitation for even more people turn up with a one-way ticket to the land of easy handouts! If there are indeed concerns that the problem is escalating then WHY would you want to make it even worse with a statement like that?

Just back in from an excellent day out with friends - thank you.

Without exception our day was ruined by these people; drunk and obnoxious beggars, in your face, smelly with dogs (in some cases).

If you came downstairs tomorrow am and found smelly, nasty and very drunk people in your kitchen, you'd call the police and expect them to be removed, why doesn't the same principle apply to the scum on our streets?

Good to see from the above posts that the tradition of Christian charity lives on the the poorest in society.

If you want to put off people coming to B&H then lets make other areas more attractive not B&H worse!

The cuts so far are only the beginning. Tomorrows website will make interesting reading with £25million in cuts likely in the councul's budget. These cuts are happening all over the country and when combined with benefit cuts will see families, many hardworking who find themselves out of work, in desperate straits and homeless.

Tax cuts for the wealthy meanwhile. We are all in it together.

Local dialect? Have I missed something? The Brighton and Sussex accents are sadly on their way out if not dead and buried already. In their places is a "Southern English" accent.

A sad situation and dialects are dying all over the country.

Why does there have to be compromise, we all know its wrong, we all want it resolved, yet the weaker among us become accepting of it. Fortunately there are stronger people in the population who are prepared to address the 'elephant in the room', which will ultimately benefit all of us.

The sooner we clear the streets of these eyesores the better for everyone.

Those 'eyesores' are people. And I know you are probably just trolling, but it is still a horrible thing to say. I really hope you are just a teenager having a laugh because I would hate to know adults have such disregard to other human beings. Why don't you try sleeping on the streets for a month, in the winter, and see how you like it? Tell me how many jobs you find. Tell me how you don't need help.

This country shouldn't get rid of migrants of 'freeloaders', it should get rid of people like you, with no conscience or morals. Starting for those in the government.

More than happy for people to support others, however not through the use of the hard working's taxes. If you want to buy someone a can of special brew then go ahead, just don't include them in my round.

I personally don't find them terrifying. I find them sad. Terrifying is a council spending money on cycle lanes and unused electric car charging points while their leader tells us the council hasn't got any money.
Shocking, stupid, incredulous and irresponsible.
Go back to your home towns Greens and let the locals look after the town because we know what we need and want.

Maxwell, I think you are correct, but not sure who you are referring to when you say you don't find them terrifying. If its the vagrants, I don't either, just unpleasant to look at and its time to get rid of them.

First of all we should ban charities for the homeless and could withdraw all funding for this charity (BHT) and instead invest monies in introducing a new anti vagrant team, designed to seek out and repatriate the vagrants.

Probably only need a couple of people supported by local volunteers (I am in, are you?). Not hard to spot them and then just need a police van.

Process could be a simple as placing under arrest for one night, or until last permanent residence of 3 years or longer identified and then get them to do some work to earn the price of a train ticket and then repatriate under a shared order with the police to receive at the far end. Notify the benefits agency that benefits can only be claimed in that location for the next 6 months - job done!

Additionally introduce a 3 strikes and you get ten years in jail policy to ensure repeat offenders are dealt with fairly.

Thoughts welcomed

Scum are scum and just because you are here under the pretence of study does not exempt one from being categorised as scum.

Fully support that principle, having enjoyed several months of noise abuse myself.

What's really irritating is that these people know what they are doing and understand the impacts, however seemingly simply don't care.

I'd lock them up 10 to a cell for a couple of months when they first do it and see whether it does the trick.

You clearly don't understand that 45% of income tax comes from 10% or less of the wealthiest earners. The 50p rate was raising little money, so pointless and disincentivising.

The comments on this forum are truly heartless, although fully expected-automatical
ly categorising any and all homeless as inferior, evil, a drain on society. Those that have no compassion for others, or anything outside their narrow minded and ignorant viewpoint.
So what if they are drunk or smell, no one is saying that’s good but does that mean they deserve to freeze to death? Try being kind just for once in your life, give and don’t expect to receive back, do a good deed for the sake of it.
