Top firm plans new seafront restaurant in Madeira Drive
The firm behind a string of award winning restaurants hopes to open a new seafront seafood business in Brighton.
The Gingerman Group is planning to open its fifth restaurant in and around the city at The Terraces complex in Madeira Drive.
The new restaurant could create up to 40 jobs, adding to the 100 employees the Gingerman Group already employs in its four restaurants in Norfolk Square and College Place in Brighton, Hove Street in Hove and Muddleswood Road near Woodmancote.
Ben McKellar, who founded the group with his wife Pamela in 1998, said he was “very excited” at the prospect of opening the biggest Gingerman restaurant yet.
He said he hoped the restaurant could open as early as February.
Planning proposals for a refurbishment costing potentially hundreds of thousands of pounds of the currently vacant spot have been submitted to Brighton and Hove City Council and a licensing application is being worked on.
Brighton Seafront Regeneration has spent the last three years developing plans to transform The Terraces.
The 50,000 square foot complex was redeveloped by Compco in 2000 and is currently occupied by a gym and restaurant but has several vacant units.
The site had once been identified as the possible location for a 1,750 capacity nightclub but plans never materialised.
A six-bedroom boutique hotel has also been mooted for the site and the arrival of the £6 million Brighton Wheel to the area in October last year was expected to help boost redevelopment plans.
Mr McKellar said he envisioned the new site as a family friendly restaurant, nothing “too high brow” and featuring an oyster bar.
He added: “A seafront restaurant is something I’ve been wanting to do because I am a huge fan of seafood restaurants and because Brighton is a seafood place.
“But I wanted to make sure I had a location where I could see the sea.
“It’s part of a big development, it won’t be just us.
“It will probably be our biggest location because it’s so prominent on the seafront and we expect it to be pretty busy.
“We hope it’s not the case that Brighton is oversaturated with our restaurants. We are big fans of Brighton and think it’s a fantastic city. They are all busy and they are all different and this new one will be different again.”
