A businessman has called on several Green councillors to step down, claiming they breached his human rights.
Adam Campbell, who owns Gill’s Home and Garden in Western Road, Hove, has been in disagreement with Brighton and Hove City Council for almost a year over loading bays in the busy road.
The local authority said it needed to introduce a ban on the north side of the road to keep traffic moving.
Mr Campbell collected more than 600 signatures against the plan, claiming it was unsafe as it forced him to carry heavy objects across the street.
However, he claims the Green administration took the decision out of “pure political bigotry and spite” after finding out he stood for the Conservatives in 2011 local elections.
Mr Campbell said: “I am a private citizen whose politics are no one’s business but my own. To have elected officials discussing what they think are my politics and then making decisions motivated by their hatred of another party is intolerable.”
Mr Campbell said the information came in emails sent between councillors Ian Davey, Ollie Sykes and Phelim MacCafferty uncovered by a Freedom of Information request.
Green councillor Pete West said: “Mr Campbell has made some fairly serious allegations here and he is clearly aware of the proper processes if he wishes to bring a case forward. I certainly do not take these claims lightly.”
Mayor Bill Randall said Mr Campbell should take his complaints to the council’s standards committee.
