The county's water levels are in a “healthy position” according to a water company.

Southern Water has announced that its reservoirs and aquifers are currently above average levels thanks to very wet weather throughout the summer.

The water company said that as long as an average amount of rain falls this autumn and winter then water resources should remain healthy going into the spring and summer of next year.

The news comes a month into the recharge season when water sources are refilled following the usually drier summer months.

Weir Wood reservoir near East Grinstead is currently at its 5,600 megalitre capacity while Powdermill near Sedlescombe is at 98% of its 1,060 megalitre capacity.

Bewl Water on the Kent and Sussex border is 80% full of its 31,000 megalitre capacity while Darwell near Robertsbridge is at just over half its 4,730 mega-litre capacity.

Meyrick Gough, Southern Water’s water quality and strategy manager, said: “Our reservoirs are in a much better position than this time last year and most of our underground sources are at normal levels.”
