Vandals have blown up another parking meter with a firework.

The meter in a car park behind Lewes Castle suffered £200 worth of damage after yobs set off a firework inside it sometime between 6pm on Thursday, November 2 and 7.30am the following morning.

The incident was only revealed by police yesterday (November 9).

Attacks on pay and display machines in Phoenix Place and Friars Walk in Lewes during October caused almost £3,000 worth of damage.

Last year 15 attacks on 14 parking meters in the town were carried out between September and November with similar incidents having been reported every year in the town since 2004.

Chief Inspector Jason Tingley, Sussex Police’s district commander for Lewes, said: "I find it difficult to understand why anyone would be so reckless as to carry out such potentially dangerous acts.

“I'm amazed that someone hasn't been injured.”

Anyone with information should contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Cohesion.
