Vandals have blown up another parking meter with a firework.

The meter in a car park behind Lewes Castle suffered £200 worth of damage after yobs set off a firework inside it sometime between 6pm on Thursday, November 2 and 7.30am the following morning.

The incident was only revealed by police yesterday (November 9).

Attacks on pay and display machines in Phoenix Place and Friars Walk in Lewes during October caused almost £3,000 worth of damage.

Last year 15 attacks on 14 parking meters in the town were carried out between September and November with similar incidents having been reported every year in the town since 2004.

Chief Inspector Jason Tingley, Sussex Police’s district commander for Lewes, said: "I find it difficult to understand why anyone would be so reckless as to carry out such potentially dangerous acts.

“I'm amazed that someone hasn't been injured.”

Anyone with information should contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Cohesion.

East Sussex County Council should change the cover on the parking meter before someone tries to sue them for walking into it in the dark, it should be wearing a VIS cover

It's time ESCC realised just how much these parking meters and the extremely high charges are not wanted by the people of Lewes and the shop keepers who have lost so much trade because of them - GET RID OF THEM ESCC, THESE ATTACKS ARE NOT GOING TO STOP!

Unfortunately its us that are going to be paying for this damage and the council isn't going to react positively to this, the cost will be passed on...

mass protest and non payment of council tax will have the prices reduced 'within a day' i might take a trip to lewes to check the legality of the markings so as they comply with current legislation

I wish it was that easy funky but i suspect the council will not change its stance. Good luck with the research and I hope you uncover some illegal findings.. :)

What a great idea to blow them up so people like us will have to pay extra in the long run in increased parking charges &/or council tax.

Am wondering which part of this subtle campaign the Council is failing to understand. How much taxpayers money is going to be wasted on what appears to be a battle of the wills which the Council is clearly not winning!
