The junction of Keymer Avenue was an accident waiting to happen, it's a dangerous turning, not helped by illegal parking for Subway on the corner.

My thoughts are with the elderly pedestrian and their family.

I have not been a resident here in this area for very long, but I found there was a lack of assistance from the police in way of traffic control. At the Meridian roundabout there was a mass of traffic building up yet while I was held up in the traffic by this terrible incident, three police cars raced passed me at different intervals. It's not for me to assume the situation or have any idea of the police procedures but possibly the extra police assistance would of been of better use for traffic control at the meridian roundabout - just to assist with congestion on the roads?

Another thing this incident has highlighted is the need for a suitable coastal bypass dual carriageway route from a junction midway up / down Wilson Avenue in Brighton to the A26 to the north of Newhaven. The traffic had to use Arundel Road to bypass the scene of the accident and, with the safety single lane setup, gridlock resulted. For that the single lane effects need to be removed and slowing ramps put in their place. But having a coastal bypass route would enable traffic to be taken over both the river and the railway to the north of Newhaven and remove their need to use the current coast road and suffer problems with the railway and / or the river crossing in Newhaven. It would at the Brighton end enable connectivity to most parts of Brighton via Black Rock or the road over the race course from Woodingdean into Brighton. In between, with connectivity to the Falmer Road between Rottingdean and Woodingdean and back into Saltdean, Telscombe Cliffs and Peacehaven using roundabouts above the carriageway, it would enable traffic to qickly and using less carbon and other bad effects, get through that area and release the current coastal road to less wear and tear and the people throughout the area with a better living environment. ONE day East Sussex County Council will appreciate the sense of this but probably not until the current coast road gets severed by erosion effects and then all hell lets loose as the A27 would not be able to cope with the consequences. The ridiculous thing is there are no contingency plans for a coastal bypass and the land that would be needed for it suitably set aside for providing it. What other Planning Department could be so very badly short sighted? Of all the others in the UK no other comes to mind!

We've got enough cars and roads already without tarmaccing over more of the countryside and building even more roads. Roads generate more traffic. We should be reducing car use, trying to get people out of cars not encouraging them even more in my opinion.
