A man collided with a bus and then a van in Hove yesterday morning (November 16).
The 31-year-old, a patient at The Priory, is believed to have been running along the pavement on the south side of New Church Road at about 7.25am.
He is thought to have been crossing the B2066 when he hit the wing mirror of a 1A bus to Whitehawk, then the windscreen of a red Mercedes van.
Both the bus and van were travelling east towards Brighton.
The man, who is believed to have suffered several blows to the head, escaped with only minor injuries.
The passengers on the busy bus, the bus driver and the driver of the Mercedes were all unhurt.
The accident closed the road between Westbourne Villas and Aymer Road until 11.12am as police investigated the scene.
The bus involved in the accident and another vehicle travelling towards the scene at the time were both fitted with CCTV which filmed the incident.
The footage has been handed to police officers.
Roger French, managing director at Brighton and Hove Bus Company, said: “We’re cooperating with the police with their full investigation into the incident.
“Our sympathies go to the man who was involved, who is in hospital, and we hope that he will recover.”
Mr French said the female driver of the bus is “doing ok”.
He added: “Hitting someone is a terrible thing to happen for any bus, train or tube driver.”
A spokesman from the Priory, which provides mental health care, said: “An incident with one of the patients this morning did result in a minor road accident.
“The patient is now in the Royal Sussex County Hospital and we are pleased that his injuries are said not to be life threatening.
“It is our policy to maintain complete patient confidentially and we will not be giving a commentary on the circumstances of this isolated incident.”
Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision to contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 0198 of 16/11 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
