The courage of children with cancer in Sussex is being recognised.

Relatives and friends are being invited to send in their nominations for Cancer Research UK’s Little Star Awards.

The awards celebrate the bravery of all children who confront cancer, and are backed by a host of famous faces including JLS, Mo Farah, Leona Lewis and Steven Gerrard.

Last year 108 children in the south east received a Little Star Award. Recipients get a trophy, a £50 TK Maxx gift card and a certificate signed by celebrities.

Lynn Daly, the charity’s spokeswoman for Sussex, said: “Around four children are diagnosed with cancer in the south east every week, that’s 220 a year.

“But the latest survival estimates show that incredible developments in treatments are offering children and their families new hope of beating the disease.

“It is fantastic news that by the end of 2012 around 33,000 long-term survivors of childhood cancer will be living in the UK, the vast majority of whom are cured.

“But we can’t stop there. Cancer Research UK is working towards a future where all children with cancer are cured.”
