Caroline Lucas set to see if Brighton currency idea is sound as a pound

Caroline Lucas set to see if Brighton currency idea is sound as a pound
Caroline Lucas is to set up a working group to investigate the feasibility of giving Brighton and Hove its own currency.
The Brighton Pavilion MP met with business leaders yesterday to discuss plans for a Brighton pound.
Representatives from Wired Sussex, Brighton and Hove Economic Partnership and the Tourism Alliance heard Tony Greenham of the New Economics Foundation outline the possible benefits of the scheme.
Mr Greenham said the complementary currency would be purchased with sterling at a one to one exchange rate. The sterling received would be held by the East Sussex Credit Union, a licensed deposit taker with assets of more than £1.3 million.
Once converted the currency could not be converted back into sterling or any other currency. It is not expected that national chains would take part in the scheme.
Dr Lucas said: “It could work in a similar way to the new Bristol pound, which involves an electronic payment system and strong participation by the local credit union and the council.
“Other proposals could include ‘time banking’, an initiative which promotes social inclusion by enabling people to ‘trade’ their time rather than their money so someone who does an hour’s painting and decorating, for example, can use the credits earned to buy an hour’s gardening from someone else.
“There’ll now be much more consultation and discussion, with a small working group looking into how best to take the process forward.”
Claire Ottewell, the chairman of the city’s tourism alliance, said a possible stumbling block for her members is that most of them belong to multiple chains.
She said: “The jury is out on the idea. I will askmymembers if they want to take it further.”
Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat said that a complementary currency scheme could give businesses access to finance through the East Sussex Credit Union.
He said: “I think the idea has potential. Whether it is as a business- to-business currency or for shoppers needs to be looked at. If it can work anywhere it can work here because there is such a strong sense of place and we have the technological expertise to make it happen.”

Regional currencies are designed to stimulate local economies, and have done. It's a good idea. If you want to have a hissy fit at the Greens, this isn't the place to do it.
Now bore off down to Stanmer Park and uproot some dandelions or something.

I can see that if you shop at local traders and sufficient numbers of local businesses take this up then there could be a significant economic boost and a benefit of keeping money in the community. Those that only shop and trade with corporations and multinationals do not seem to be the people who this scheme is initially aimed at.
It is easy to take a pop at this as it is an example of lateral thinking and change to the othordox, which frightens some people as demonstrated above.

However, the increase in parking charges in the city has gained national coverage and been a PR disaster for the city particularly as our local radio stations are advertising rail trips into London at a price cheaper than a day bus ticket.

Had this been Kirby or Weatherley then there would not been a peep. Is it an organised campaign I wonder?
Are there schemes that work? If the answer is yes, then can they be applied to B&H successfully? If yes then we should explore doing so. If no is the answer to the above then we should not proceed. That is the grown up thing to do.
It is clear that most of the above will not join in, that is not a problem as there are many that will support a scheme if it can be demonstrated to work, particularly if it supports our local shops and suppliers.

This scheme is nonsense. As with any form of currency it relies on people accepting it and no-one who is visiting the city is going to accept Brighton pounds as change from sterling as they will not be able to spend it when they return to their own town. Likewise big businesses will not acept it and have their hands tied as to where they can utilise it. Neither will workers accept it in their pay packets and have their spending choices restricted. So we will be left with a few hippie traders in the North Laines using it between each other as they do currently. Funny how the Greens are against international borders but want to batten down the hatches when it comes to economics. Maybe they should just join UKIP.

ng your posts are definately becoming more articulate, the comments page is obviously doing you some good.
However, as you obviously have superior "critical thinking and problem solving skills" than myself I am a little confused as to your view of my point, which is; if a B&H pound can be introduced in such a way that it benefits local people and traders should it be introduced? It is clear that most of the above will not join in, that is not a problem as there are many that will support a scheme if it can be demonstrated to work, particularly if it supports our local shops and suppliers.

As for the Brighton pound, I agree that it is a ludicrous suggestion considering we are a (ahem) city by and large dependant on tourism. Local currency is a gimmick that would do little towards ensuring and encouraging local growth.

In the most basic language I can muster, the Brighton pound is a nonsense, if you had more than a couple of effective brain cells you could work that out for yourself. As you seemingly don't then have a good read of all the comments above, where there are many cues and also some real-life evaluation.

How laughable that you and others seek to misrepresent a scheme that could aid local Brighton and Hove businesses. I also note how few of the nagative posters say a peep about the forthcoming £50 million of cuts over the next two years forced upon the council by the Tories. What have your Weatherley and Kirby done to defend the council's budget...deafening silence. It seems to me that many of you actually want to do down the city.
The Tories were useless and Labour, while they made some notable achievements, fritted away an opportunity to transform B&H at a time when money was plentiful.
The council has been very successful recently in levering additional funding for a number of infrastructure schemes, which get the trolls frothing at the mouth.
The Green Party is a disgrace. It cost £3.50 to park for 5 minutes to collect something from a HiFi shop today in London Road. What do you think I did - had lunch there and looked in other shops or collected my stuff and drove off. If I need to go back I will get somebody to wait in the car so I don't need to pay for parking. Not everyone is rich like Caroline Lucas and the Green people. Shops no doubt in this area and the North Lanes and Brighton generally have seen a drop in trade. Initially they can cut their costs by reducing people's hours or not replacing staff. After a while they can't carry on and the city, tourists and residents will lose out. Get rid of the Greens please and quickly.

Did the Lewes pound provide a positive stimulus to the Lewes economy? Is it still going? What lessons cn be learned to make a Brighton pound successful? Does the Bristol scheme working or are there other working examples? I would like to know, perhaps the Argus could do some investigative journalism on what could be a significant economic evelopment.
It is quite probable that a Brighton pound would attract interest from outside the town for some negative reasons.

Thou shalt chop down ash, oak and other trees at Wild Park, and so create a paradise for sheep and the shepherd, having driven out the people with thy fencing and destroyed the habitat of some 90 species, at a cost of £120,000.
(That’s real money by the way, not made-up Brighton pounds).
If I am not wrong, the change of habitat to calcareous grass land has been progressing for a number of years over several administrations.
Also, it's worth pointing out that the landscape there has been managed for a number of years, rather than being wiped out on a whim, as is now happening.
As the party in power, the Greens are overseeing the eradication of habitat where their own council survey discovered more than 90 new species previously unrecorded in the area.
This clearance will allow an ever-expanding portion of the park to be fenced off so it can be grazed by sheep, with the administration taking funding that was really intended for farmers as a consequence.
This means that money that would have gone to helping conservation of nature elsewhere has therefore been diverted to destroying much-loved green space in a public park on the urban fringe.
Please do explain how felling trees to make money in this way fits in with Green Party philosophy? Perhaps our MP would like to comment? Surely it's basically the same as clearing the Amazon rainforest for grazing - except the Greens obviously prefer sheep to cattle?

Usual troll squad responses.
1. Thou shalt not eat meet on Monday.
2. Thou shall not play the National lottery for tis bad for the working class who cannot be trusted to spend their money responsibly.
3. Thou shalt not burn yuletide logs at the time formally known as Christmas.
4. Thou shalt not refer to each other as Mr or Mrs for thou art gender neutral and it is an abomination to two citizens and the Lord Phelim.
5. Thou shalt not use thy car unless thou is rich and can afford to park it.
6. Thou shalt not attend Farmer's Markets for they are the crucibles of speciesism a discrimination akin to racism and homophobia (this commandment to be phased in by 2016).
7. Thou shalt not use money save for the Brighton Pound and otherwise return to the barter system for Caroline delights in clean exchanges amongst the self-rightous.
8. Thou shalt ride thy bike the wrong way down one-way streets for the laws of the road do not apply to thou and Jason shall rise up and apply his laws to his people and smite the petrolheads.
Two more to go. Or have I missed anything?
2. "thou shall";
3. "formally";
6. "farmer's".
Personally, I blame the teachers. Especially the Latin teachers. At the public (sic.) school wot General Dreedle went to.
