A burglar who ran down a woman on the way to raid a shop and left her for dead has been jailed for more than five years.

Christopher Chan ran down Michelle Greest on Brighton seafront, stole two cars, committed a string of motoring offences and burgled a Portslade flooring shop twice in the early hours of July 15.

Miss Greest broke bones in ten places, had to have two metal plates fitted to her lower legs and still walks with a limp. The former marathon competitor is still unable to run.

Yesterday (November 19) Chan, 31, of no fixed address, was jailed for five years and eight months at Lewes Crown Court.

Judge David Rennie said: “In all my years presiding in court I have never come across someone with such complete and utter contempt for the law and all those you come into contact with, ruining their lives in every way imaginable.

“On the morning you mowed down Michelle Greest, true to form, you busied yourself with committing more offences showing a complete disregard for society and its rules.”

Congratulations to PC's Upjohn and Langley of Polegate Traffic for getting the vehicle stopped and arresting this individual. Although the sentence handed down to him is inadequate, praise should be given to these two officers for nicking him and taking him out of society. Well done.

He didn't seem very remorseful when filmed coming out of court.
It's a shame he didn't wipe himself out in the car as he doens't add anything to the world, just takes, takes, takes.
He is a waste of a life.

Yes my friend you have got this spot on.I feel so sorry for this young lady, yet again the courts let the victim down.I saw the poor girl on tv last talking about it.In 94 i was given 7 years when a guy that had very good reason to lie said i drove my car at him but missed. He got know injury not even a scratch.I did the full sentence in class A prisons Parkhurt & Wandsworth hell holes like that. This guy will be in Ford open prison within a year or so.As most of you will be able to work out my case was never reported in the press at the time as so many people were payed off. This poor young lady has been very let down.
